Ah I see the ECS kit (which I couldn't find on awsome GTi btw) is a fancy more expensive kit :p

Parts look like less than a 100 quids worth... fair enough.. but I still can't get a cheap quote anywhere lol

Edit:

The link posted refers to these parts:

Product Needed

Timing Belt
Timing Belt Tensioner
Timing Belt Idler Pulley
Water pump (with metal impeller)
Coolant G12
Distilled Water
Accessory belt (optional )
Thermostat (optional DIY does not cover)
New engine mount bolts

As i'm not DIY'ing mine which bits come in the kit and which do not? I'm worried that some garages are quoting with less parts than others, but as I have no idea about cars I don't know what i'm paying for!
Am I right in thinking I need to ask for a Full Cambelt Kit + Tensioner? + a Water Pump with Metal Impeller. I get the feeling i'm being quoted without this tensioner I have no idea about..

A - a specialist is someone who deals mainly with VAG cars, not your everyday normal garage like Kwik-Fit and the likes.

B - Nobody does it for £75, read the posts again. My local company do it for £250

Like I said above I was quoting with the ECS Kit prices which are alot more expensive :)

You're lucky to be able to get work done cheap [B)]

So the cambelt kit includes the belt, a roller and a tensioner but I also need to ask to have a damper tensioner done too? (and the waterpump of course)

I'm getting all confused between my idlers, pullies, tensioners and what not.

I don't want to spent £350 getting it all done and then someone turns around and says "Why on earth didn't you get the wotsit replced at the same time?!"

Just booked it in at PKF Engineering Limited in Salisbury. They quoted me £297 for the lot.

Had a bit of a problem getting them to fit a metal impeller water pump though as they rely on the dealers for parts and told me that the local Seat Dealer couldn't guarantee that if they ordered a water pump that it would come with the metal impeller as 'they come as they are'.

I said that i'd already had a quote through that very dealer with an agreed metal impeller! and asked them to push it more as would be the difference of getting the job or not. Seat still refused to get the right pump so they tried Audi who wouldn't get it so they found it through some other source and said it cost the same as i'd already told them :p
They didn't have any courtesy cars though but said they would be happy to lend me one of their own cars, result!

Not as cheap as a couple of guys on here have managed to get it but not far off and for round here it looks to be by far the best i'm going to get. The mechanics appear to have a very good background with german cars too :)

I'd love to know which dealer you got that quote from mate......

My local dealer has quoted me £225 for the parts (inc water pump) and approx £300 labour to fit.

Local independant (C&R Enterprises in Nottingham) quoted me £450+ (inc water pump)

ok, ive called my local dealer for you, (hertfordshire) and got quoted £285 for cam belt change. inclusive of (vat). so thats about £242 excluding vat which is what i probably what i saw listed. This is for the cambelt 'kit' which includes belt tensioner etc. But not water pump.
With water pump they quoted £370 inclusive. (said happy to fit brass impeller but may be a little more for part). so perhaps £380 for brass impeller.

They did say 'we wont quote you full cost for water pump as we will already have all the bits off doing the belt change'.

I can noly assume that your dealer quote was based on the book cost for a cam belt change and water pump change calculated seperately then added together.

Dropped my car off this morning, staff are all pretty friendly and I got an M3 to use for the day which was a little unexpected.

Well I finally got round to changing the timing belt, what a pig of a job. :censored:

Started at 07:30 finished at 19:30 12 hrs. I think an extra pair of hands would have helped to speed up the job, as constantly climbing from under the car to the top of the engine to check the timing marks and move that tw*t [:@]of a engine mount around, which is really time consuming. Plenty of coffee breaks and an hour spent looking for a lost bolt from the tensioner didn’t help. On the final check before pulling the pin on the tensioner, found the belt had jumped 2 teeth on the camshaft sprocket.[:@] After a strip down and reset everything went back together OK. It’s not a technically demanding job just a frustrating one due to the lack of space. I was quite surprised with the condition of the removed components after 40000 miles and 4 years of service, the water pump, belts, and tensioner all looked in new condition. Glad its done for peace of mind and would DIY it again if needed, would be a lot quicker the second time. I was a little apprehensive when turning the key to start her up, as the sound of valves in contact with pistons lurked in the back of my mind, but everything was fine.

Thanks to everyone who posted links and advice, it all helped. Just shows how the collective knowledge on our forum can help and encourage us all.

Well a week in now and everything seams normal except, when I lift off or de-clutch I get a strange rattle.

Checked pipes and everything else disconnected during belt change, but cant find anything loose, any thoughts?
