Spec Clutche's Or what else???

Hello all,

im wondering if you can help me?

Im looking at running around 360BHP on my TT using the backdraft GT2871R Kit + various other mods.

I need a clucth & flywheel, where is the most cost affective place to buy it from, and what clucth should i chose? Spec Stage3+?? How much would i be looking at this kit???

stage 3 would be fine. you wouldnt NEED the +

Spec clutches have had many, many, many failures. I've found the Helix Group N clutch and single-mass flywheel to be 100% reliable so far, no problems for 2 years.

South Bend have got themself a good reputation. I run a Spec 3+ which so far has been OK but they screwed up my order from America by sending the wrong flywheel even though when emailing them i gave them the right part number,hole size and number, diameter etc which was packed in the right part number box so nobody noticed until the gar was on a ramp and split open. Ended up buying another flywheel from them and having it flown over as fast as posssible and not the first or last person it has happend to either read HERE

Good feel and strong as an ox.

Not sure why everyone seems so down on Spec in this thread as I have had nothing but praise over 10k miles so far and it don't get treated lightly.

You get a bit of noise with the SMF (I went for the extra light option) but it comes with the territory.

Spec stage 3 here. I hear bad things but mine has been perfect for the last 8 months and when I got it they couldnt be praised enough by people on this forum!

use a few more revs then..

Stage 3+ on mine for years... zero problems.
maybe I am lucky (not normally)

I started with Helix, and smf... one of the 1st on SCN to do this on an ibiza cupra back in 2002 after my dual mass std one slipped @ only 12k miles.

VR6 cover/centre plate on ABF flywheel std @ first. Helix organic centre plate. dusted up a lot resulting in some release bearing binding.. It would smell orrid when launching but never slipped as such. Changed to their 4puk paddle clutch after. This one was more on/off less progressive and did judder unless you span more rpm up. Within a year the puks had worn away. Not good milage.

Changed to Spec Stage 3, and fine. Changed to Stage 3+ on a g'box replacement the year after, and have stuck with stage 3+ ever since. been fine for me.

But as i broke it a few weeks back i have gone up to the stage 4+ and im still waiting for it. I far as im concerned i would never put Spec on a car again mainly due to the bad experience and lack of support from them.

If i was to get a new clutch then i would go for the South Bend or Helix full ceramic. But TBH they all look the same.

I have found this to be the case on the aluminum units.Not on the steel...maybe you guys have worst luck?

As for SPEC,I have been running Spec Stage 3+ in my own personal car for years and I have always liked them.I deal DIRECT with David Norton .All in all they are a good clutch BUT there reputation seems to be getting worst as the years go by.I had 2 customers that had serious issues with there clutch set ups and spec dealt with them in a professional manner.

That being said Southbend clutches are VERY GOOD,not only in performance but also in service.If you tell SB that your clutch is slipping,they will send you a new one no questions asked...great guys to deal with but the website SUCKS for navigation.
My friend who does my web hosting is going to redo there website so that they can generate more business.

Caney: if your flywheels rattling m8 i would be VERY concerned

input shaft rattle on the g'box is the noise.
same on 02J as 02M boxes

steel flywheel or ally flywheel they all are louder at idle no clutch depressed in my experience.

Spec thrust bearings are cr4p in my opinion, being looser than worn std ones.

Their cluthes for me have been sound.
Might try a southbend next

You can hear my Spec clutch rattle while in reverse and in first gear in low revs. Flywheel vibrates if i accelerate at low revs in a high gear as well but it does hold the torque so far but will be trying a SB clutch next time.

02M always seem to rattle much worse than the 02J's no matter if its steel or Ally.
