Jut noticed something really strange in my tdi tonight.

AS i put it into reverse gear theres a quiet fan noise seems to start up under the glovebox area but cant find any kind of draught from anywhere, back into neutral and it stops.
Its a different kind of fan noise to the normal heating fan.

Any ideas?

Its the heater/aircon blower. When you go into reverse, it switches to recirculation mode so exhaust fumes aren't sucked into the car.

Thanks for the info guys! I was wondering what the noise was!

On another note, has anyone ever heard a weird feint noise that sounds like an electrical buzz thats intermitant at low speeds when the Climate is on? Its really weird and hard to explain!?

With climate control, it's the little motors adjusting the flaps etc. that control the air flow through the car that you can hear buzzing and whining away. Sometimes they are quite noticeable when you start the car without the radio on

Is it possible to turn that feature on/off? Only ask as mine seems to have stopped doing it.. or at least.. Doesn't seem to all the time..

But you have the heating controls etc.? The reverse gear recirculation thing still happens even if you don't have climate control

i know about the reverse thing i hear that all the time but i also occasionally get a seperate buzzing/whineing sound from the heating system.

I would guess that your reversing light will also only get switched on randomly - check and see, if so this will be the cause of the lack of re-circulating mode while in reverse.
