Still got to declare the mods to your insurnace though - and given how cheap th GTi's are to insure, it seems silly to spend money adding to a 60bhp engine.

I aren't being funny but going back onto the days of vauxhall nova's and early corsa's with a bit of fettling you could make a low cc engine be pretty quick for what it was. I say go for it, its different and will sound bloody fantastic with bike carbs. Theres a guy near me (east yorkshire) called Dave Bogg,he can make inlets for bike carbs and set the engines up on his rolling road. My advice is, if your serious about squeezing some more power from your lump is to not just go the carb route, get a high lift cam fitted so you'll feel more of a gain when you put your foot down. Going the two litre option is in the long run cheaper because its already producing reasonable power but if insurance is an issue then tune what you've got i say :D

Paul

My thoughts exactly and thats what im going to do lol :p

i think its a good idea yeah maybe in the futre its a good idea to drop a 16v lump in. Its a good idea and one i have been toying with for a while now, its new and its fresh and if its not worth it in the long run at least you can you have tried, but if it works surely with the power you will be producing you could potentially have the goods to keep with a GTI.

Now that IS pie in the sky mate. Sorry.

The 1.4 8v is 60 bhp.
The 2.9 8v is 115 bhp.

So you have to almost double the power output of the original engine. How much do you reckon that would cost?

Carbs. Cam. Custom exhaust. Headwork. And then some, probably.

And that's just the 'go'. You also need to make it stop.

Or you could go out and buy a good GTi for what, £1200?

The 2.9 8v is 115 bhp guess that should of been 2.0 8v. lol. ok maybe it was a bit high but surely it would make a quick car and if he wants to do it whos to stop him people should be trying to help him with advice not just telling him to buy a gti mate.

people are giving him advice,, not to do it... if you are silly enough to ignore all the comments you will spend alot of money on doing it, and you will have to sort out braking too... prob cheaper to get a gti and insure it

Oops yeah, 2.0 8v. The 9 and 0 buttons are next to each other :) Would quite fancy a 2.9 in the Ibiza, that would be a fun car!

Thing is, it wouldn't be that quick. It would be a waste of money. Saying 'buy a GTI' is help and advice! There must be loads of information out there on t'internet about putting carbs on. I have nothing against trying it, but why not try it on a worthwhile engine in the first place? No offence intended

If you wana do it that badly buy a non running gti and drop the 1.4 into that

If you can do it yourself then go for it, if your going to have to pay to have it fitted and set up then maybe hang on for a GTi. Also take into account extra stresses that upgrades may cause on stock components and upgrade accordingly. Sticking carbs on an engine rated for 60bhp of fuel injected goodness could make it go bang, however many miles it has on it.

Its a good idea and I like the idea because its different.

But why dont you buy say a gti engine, put carbs etc on it and get it set up properly and then drop that in the car you have. Saves having your car off the road for a while etc.

Paul

anyone now of a place i can get a high lift cam for a 1.4 8v????

Yeah ive seen that link before it has some good info. Cheers ronnie

Yeah plus 1 on the high lift cam where do we get them?

i think your overlooking everyones advice a little to easily. installing them isn't a case of "popping" them on, your going to have to have a custom manifold made to install, then the fuel injection system ripped out, then when you have them "set up" by a proffesional that wont be the end of it, as to keep it running at max performance! when its cold you'll need it setting up again and tweaking and then when it gets warmer it'll need setting up again and then again in the summer and unless you want to open your bonnet every week to adjust them then its going to be a pain in the arse for what? 100bhp TOPS with everything included such as exhaust system and cams and head work! THEN as peeps have said you'll need brakes upgrading and everything chassis wise upgrading so you can at least turn...
this in no way will be cheap and for that you are also on the verge of breaking the golden rule of modifying.....DONT SPEND MONEY MODDING SOMETHING THAT CAN BE BOUGHT! not saying it can be bought but check this out..

ibiza 1.4 >>> 60bhp>>>££££>>>100-110BHP MAX
ibiza gti 2.0 8v >>> 115bhp >>>>££££>>> Insurance paid for and a nice quick motor and maybe some mods too.

when i had a 1.4 i did consider this- for gods sake if you have any sense dont waste your money!!

what about modding a BMW 2.0 litre 6pot??? the oldish type enfine found in an E36?????

Fair play to ya to be honest

hell of a lot of cons compared to pros and as long as you don't expect a bolt on trouble free nitro/turbo type improvement then go for it, but u got my repsect for doing something different

hell i'd do it just for the sound it makes anyway :)

Straight off, you could be forgiven for not taking advice form the wilfmeister as from his picture he looks a bit of a dodgy Character LOL :D however everyone is right who has said that it would be way way better to buy an 8v or 16v and start there.

Start low and work your way up, ….i am sure no one means to dash your dreams of building a vr6 but you will never get your money back on what its cost to put together.

My advice is get a 8v or 16v and if 150bhp in a 16v and 0-60 in 7.6 isnt fast enough for you then drop a vr6 on it or supercharge it.
