LCR suspension..'not that bad really'..

has anyone else noticed in all fairness the stock LCR suspension isnt actually that bad?, especially for fast road use. we all know the dampers have a limited life span, and they squeek and groan in the wet etc.. and i admit i have got rear spacers and front strut brace but ever so lately (since i ordered some coilovers) i thought i would see how it really is..nothing to lose and all that.

just driving normally at the speed limit on a dual carrageway and approaching a roundabout, slowed a bit and turned into the apex, now if you balance the throttle etc with good steering input it actually isnt so bad, a little too much body roll yeah, but it goes into corners pretty well.

obviously if i was going on track it would be a whole different story, but im talking about fast road use....

isnt this always the way?, you feel ill so you call the doctor (but you feel better on the morning of the appointment)...or you buy coilovers and you realize the suspension aint too bad out the box?...

i have been informed by someone that the whole lowering of the car for better handling is a bit of a myth as the mk4 suspension actually works better at standard height, just needs various mods to tighten it all up, i.e mounts, ARBS, spacers, strutbrace etc..

just wondered what anyones thoughts are on this

Id agree with you,my last car was an octavia vrs and was like wrestling an ocean liner round corners sometimes but my standard LCR,i think anyway, is very sharp when throwing it into and around corners so at least in my experience the standard suspension as far as road holding goes is pretty good,cant really grumble!

haha, no worries mate its in great nick..
was just trying to see what it can actually do on the road...funny thing is the past few days with the weather being very wet and cold, it has still turned into corners really tightly

Theres a road near me known as the dukes pass(some of the scottish folks may know it) and the road is just corner after corner some insanely tight and my LCR has coped very well throwing it over this road on more than one occasion!

i know alot of people had the shox fail but im sure its bad luck, my mates lcr is on ttrack more then normal roads on stock suspention done 100k, his spring just snapped and gone for coilovers, so they do last, and they do well on track for standard, (by saying this im not saying its the BEST setup)

im happy with my suspention, lowered a tad and i do loads of track but not enough to justify coilovers, i bet most people on the site only get them for slamming the car. not actually to go on track, im sticking with my set up till it goes pop,

the thing is you do notice a hell of a lot of body roll with these cars, especially on country roads and before the spacers and strutbrace i didnt have too much confidence in the bends, but as i said coupled with all the above mods, the suspension is still pretty good...and in the last few weeks i have really begun to explore its limits

the reason ARBS etc were not added imo is because the car would of rivalled or even bettered its big brother the S3

Also will fitting them and just a rear ARB realy improve the handling that much???

15mm mate, and i just have a strutbrace...no ARBS a yet but i have a custom rear strut on the way

Wait till you get the new suspension on mate,you wont look back at the standard suspension with much regret

i have always found a good seat helps aswell, im a skinny fella and find i move alot in the lcr seats,

dont get me wrong about suspention, i had an awsome track ready clio cup ,but those were the days i didnt mind a bumpy noisy ride, (no pun intended)

i wont comprimise a comfy setup these days for the sake of the car sitting low.

i know i will probably get shot down for my comment but each to there own,

i'll second that about the LCR seats nev; they were definately not designed for skinny folk like us; have you seen those CG-Locks for seat belts? meant to give the "harness effect"

it's not too bad i suppose but the longer i have my car the more i expect from it. when i got mine i remember thinking how sharp the turn in was and how flat it drove, i was well impressed! a year later i'm now a little pickier, i find that the back of the car follows the steering wheel a couple of tenths of a second later than when you turn it, and the shocks don't so much absorb the bumps as rattle over them! don't get me wrong i'm not slating it as it is good in standard form for a roed car, but a few chosen small mods i'm sure would really liven her up!

like i said nev i'm sure ARB's, strut brace on the front and spacers would totally transform the car, all relativly cheap to do. like dolby said though it begs the question "why not do this and sell the car for an extra £700 from the factory?"

that said this would probably make it a tad too harsh for other buyers that aren't as performance driven as us lot!
