Just had a gearbox oil change with the hope of a slicker gearchange - as my third gear was clonking a bit. Now its worse and does it in first second and third! Whats gone wrong?

If the gearbox oil level is too high it can have that affect. In fact too high can be worse than too low.

maybe they overfilled it.

Is there any way of checking if its over filled? Apart from bringing it back to the garage - which i can't do for another couple of weeks anyway

There's an oil level bolt on the gearbox. The level should be up to the lower edge of the hole. Which gearbox/mk4 do you have?

If you can find the level bolt and remove it. Any excess oil should come out of the hole and leave the level just at the level of the hole.

make sure the cars on the flat when doing this. i know some one who done it on ramps and wondered y it was shocking after because he drained to much out

Does anyone have a picture of where this is located? My 1st and 2nd don't seem as nice as they could be so just want to check. But heard that VAG 1st/2nd are bad anyway.

My 1st and 2nd aren't great either, but I believe it's a common problem particularly on the 130 TDI's and probably due to worn synchros.
I'm currently considering finding a second hand box and refurbing it, then fitting it when I decide to get my clutch done.

Like I say I've heard it's a common VAG thing, and when driving VAG's in work I've experienced worse so I'm happy with mine. :)

Yup mines 2nd and 3rd..... annoying the hell out of me to be honest. It gets better when its warmed up a bit. meh.

It's slightly different depending on which gearbox you have, but should be a hexagonal or star kind of inverse bolt.

You might need something like this:
