Hi guys

right my clutch has gradually been getting harder work to use over the last couple of weeks. It doesn't seem to be slipping, but, when pulling away it takes me slightly longer to get away (using the same level of revs as when it seemed to be fine) or I need to put a few more revs on to pull away at the same speed as before.

Took it down to a garage who is suggesting that it could be the clutch plate going hard - my car has only just ticked over 40k, and is a 51 plate. I bought the car a year ago on 16k and have only done motorway miles since then, so really the clutch has had barely any use really in the last 7 and a half years!

The mechanic was saying its similar to old drum style brakes - they would go hard and glassy when not used, which basically means for me there is no grip in the clutch, so I can still use it but it is harder to pull away smoothly.

The only way we can think of rectifying this is replacing the clutch. Bit annoying considering the car has so few miles on it though?

Any other suggestions? Was just thinking of staying OEM unless anyone has any better ideas - currently no mods although I will get a remap when the insurance co stop bending me over

Cheers

James

welcome to the world of getting stuck on the m40 if you dont watch out bro.

Im going with the Awesome GTI kit for £315 but maybe you only want the clutch kit for £150 ish from gsf.

If its not slipping then you can get away with staying on the stock DMF. But personally id get a full single mass kit so your good for another 90K. Last thing you want is doing this job now, then in another 50K having to do the flywheel.

Yeah I know - it is well under, as I said especially when my mileage has mainly been motorway.

how much am I looking at for a SMF Robb?

Dont think its the brakes Junior Senior, would think I'd have noticed by now - although will check when I get to work tomorrow, you could be right.

You can get the whole kit from awesome

Supposed to be an up-rated clutch and solid lighter flywheel over standard which will make the engine a little more free revving.

Ebay has this:

If your not looking to re-map or anything, you can stil convert but id assume for that price it will just be a standard clutch and not rated to 275Lb/Ft like the awsome one.

I think that conversion kit is the same on James is getting. looks good but a bit more expensive than I'd like to spend at the moment. It's probably wise to do the lot at the same time so that if/when I do remap I wont need to bother, but not sure I fancy all that spondoodle when I dont know when I will remap.

Although saying that even remapped would a 110 wouldn't produce enough torque to NEED an uprated clutch would it?

its a fine line tbh. I think that kit can be bought for much cheaper if you ask about on uk mkivs. But the awesome kit comes with every single piece you need for the conversion.

so imo its worth it.

but you got time on your hands whereas my cars sitting in the garage waiting for parts lol.

JamesL you got msn?

What james said really mate. IIRC all you need its a VR6 clutch kit and a G60 flywheel. The 2 should come with thier own seperate bolts id imagine. You shoulnt need the aligment tool, any decent garage should have a set of spline's to fit the clutch.

you need special bolts for the fly wheel, the original ones are too long and if you torque em too much they will shread the taps.

hmm, I'll have a look about on uk mkivs then, cheers for the heads up James. I'll drop you a PM.

Looking on GSF a 228 mk3 golf VR6 clutch kit is 82.50 net, 'rado G60 228 clutch kit is 86.45, however no mention of a G60 flywheel? Am I being daft?
