Ok so last night my Turbo popped. I’m pretty sure the turbo on my car (cupra tdi 160) is a garret VNT GT1749V (PART NUMBER 742614) now I have been weighing up the options, after speaking to a few companies these are the results:

1. Awesome gti say; £1200+VAT for brand new turbo with hybrid upgrade

2. turbo dynamics say; £690+ VAT for standard turbo, with stage 1 hybrid £1025+VAT (220-240 hp), with stage 2 hybrid £1095+VAT (up to 260 hp and 400 ft.lb torque) which I can get for £1000 all in (trade discount)

3. turbo centre uk say they can take my original fudged turbo repair it, then hybrid it to what is equivalent to above's stage 2 for a MAX of £525+VAT (repair and hybrid) with a 2 year guarantee.

or if i could get a second hand one cheap (around 200ish) and get that hybrid by turbo centre uk i need to pay £150+VAT so could cost me £400 this way.

Any ideas would be much appretiated, thanks in advance

oh and with this upgrade i will also be buying an uprated clutch with a single flywheel instead of a dual, and possibly look into a diff. anyone upgraded their clutch on the cupra tdi's?

id go with the second hand turbo and get it hybirded, yea its the cheapest way but dont they gut the old turbo and swapped bits around so its like referbished on and at a guess turbo uk will give you a two year gaurrentee like on you third option,

i have been speaking to a few other turbo specialists i know and they said if im going hybrid i may aswell use my turbo that has gone because they change internals and machine it etc

If you do get a uprated one you will need a uprated exhaust too...

yes on the list too,

Mine has a sachs in it and a SMF, its a little bit louder than the DMF but its not horrible, with the windows up you can hardly tell the difference.

how much did it cost you? and what power can it handle?? also apart from weight whats the advantage/disadvantage of having a SMF instead of a dual?

how many people have had turbo's go on the cupra tdi, i only ask as the car i am buying had a turbo go recently and was replaced under warranty ( which is good for me) but just seems that maybe the turbo is not up to the job its asked of.

Erm i cant remember exact cost, think it came to just under a grand after id bought all new bolts n gearbox oil n everything to do the job and that was fitting it myself!
Think the clutch is rated to 400lbs of torque. It bites very hard and puts the power down really well. I just get more wheelspin now. LSD next i think :D

Advantages are that i wont have to worry about a DMF breaking up again, i just wanted to do the job once and do it so it would be strong and reliable and so far it has been :)

will be getting an LSD too. so far my plan is now to get my turbo reconditioned and then hybrid. upgrade clutch and put in a SMF, maybe get exhaust. but will be doing most of the work myself, with the help of my mate to do LSD. what u think?

does anyone know what other turbo's fit onto the cupra tdi? would one off a 2.0 A3 tdi 140bhp fit?was just wondering...my mate has one and was offering it free, looks almost identical to the one thats on...
