I've got a 2005 Ibiza Cupra, has engine fault light. I have already taken it to Seat to get the codes and fix a coolent sensor and now the light is back.

Don't want to pay £40 to get the codes this time so what are my options?

I see I need an OBD2 cable USB to OBD2, but what type? there are loads of versions. Some with something called CAN some without.

Does anyone know which type I need for my car and what software?

Just want to know what is wrong with the car asap

Found this post forums/showthread.php?t=93385&highlight=obd2

but still not sure if the version number makes any difference, e.f. 409.1, 704.1, 80something

Well, if you are only wanting to find out what the problems are with the engine, ABS, AUTO TRANS or the passenger safety devices, then why not buy the Gendan VAG reader which will cough out any fault codes and let you clear them (as long as they are intermittant and not now present). It only costs about £40 delivered (www.gendan.co.uk). I have VAG-COM or at least the latest VCDS, but I carry this Gendan reader with me in the car - just in case. VAG-COM or VCDS does a lot more, but this is only useful is you are a car nut or fixer - I might be both (I think!). One last thing though, after you get this, I'd sniff around the internet for a good complete listing of VAG OBD2 codes, I originally used this Gendan reader to check a friend's car (GOLF 4) and it threw out a code that the included list did not list - but I would not hold this against this cheap reader as the internet supplied the extended list.

Thanks for the info. I got hold of a fault reader and got the fault info.

So I guess what I'm looking for now is something to allow me to change settings (e.g. Cruise Control)

Any ideas?

Best thing to do is get the full version from ross-tech

it pays for itself after a while

Worth every penny!

Hup, if you are serious then I'd agree with that, I seem to remember that the ross-tech website gives regional distributors lists, I bought my original VAG-COM and some years later traded it in against VCDS from Ilexa (www.ilexa.co.uk) or (www.onboarddiagnostics.com) - who are a UK based VAG-COM seller who will always be there to give you support directly or via their user forum.
