How easy is it to change the oil pressure switch on a Mk2 Ibiza Cupra? I know where it is and I have one on order but just want know the best way to change it?

engine that's cold - or slightly warm if weather sucks helps keep hands warm :) but not running for sure

unplug wiring connector

use suitable sized spanner/wrench to undo sensor until loose

check for washer or seal if fitted as you unscrew it by hand

screw in new one after checking seal if fitted

nip up tight with same tool as above

reconnect wiring

turn igition on - check lamp operation - start car - check lamp goes out

pretty sure they dont have a washer/seal on em like the water ones i've just done but check just in case

I assume you know there are two engine oil pressure switches on the Cupra?

Are you sure about that one? I have looked at the ABF manual and the other sensor is the oil temperature transmitter for the MFA

yep he is correct, only if you have the oem oil pressure gauges, one sender for light, the other for pressure ;)

So I will have to change both sensors then if it doesnt cure the problem after changing only one of them?

Whilst I am sure this is correct, it is not what I was talking about. The cupra has as standard two oil pressure switches which both feed the oil pressure warning light. The one above the oil filter is the low pressure switch, which is open circuit when the engine oil pressure is too low. The high pressure switch (which is located in the head, I think) is open circuit when the engine oil pressure is too high. In order for the oil pressure warning light to go out, both of these switches must be closed (shorted to earth). This second switch is why fitting GTi gauges in a lower spec Ibiza results in an oil pressure warning, because the car only will only have the low pressure switch.

What is the fault you have, Devoncupra?

with the gauges your ment to get the extra pressure sender, it has two terminals there instead of the one. most people try to bodge that, lucky enough i sourded all the bits to do my install of them, il have a look through my photos of rebuild and try and trace thee other sender ;)

Hi bete noir, The oil light will flash on and off, but it is an intermittent fault and will sometimes flash and sometimes it will be ok? (Hope that makes sense!)

Crezz, If you can find the photos that would be great!

Intermittent faults can be a b*tch to diagnose, but I reckon you're doing the right thing by starting with the switch.

Having said that, it might be worth having someone sit in the car with the engine running and see if you can replicate the fault by wiggling the oil pressure switch wire about. It doesn't cost anything to try, and you might even save yourself the cost of a switch.
