Now feel free to take the piss if you so wish, because I know this will probably be a stupid question to most of you guys judging from how great your bays look.......but how do you clean them up to a starting point before detailing?

In the past I've used steam cleaners with the usual engine degreaser but would I get away with using a little spray from a hose pipe? Or would this just end up leading to big trouble?

Good call! Problem is that its NEVER been cleaned properly under the bonnet, so there's a massive build up of crap that needs to be cleaned away and sadly I don't think that simply spraying over it will cut it!

Yeah....but how do you wash the Gunk etc off when cleaning it - hose pipe, sponge and water, etc?

spray the engine bay with gunk. cover up electrics with plastic bags. then rinse with water. this give you a good start. also you might want to use a stiff brush and work the gunk in the tight places. once rinsed off spray your bay with aqua wax, when wet. now buff off with a micro fibre cloth. now i use the bumper care to shine up all the hoses. job done
once the bay is clean its very easy to keep it that way

I flushed my engine with a bucket of water ^^. I did cover only maf sensor pretty much.

I use the pressuer washer on mine, This might sound strange but dont turn it on just use the pressure from the tap, the small tip on the lance is perfect for getting the water to go where you want without soaking everything else
