well im looking to do a engine conversion on my mk2 now in the next few months and im sourcing the engine i need but most places are confusing me

i know a few cars use a 1.8 20vt engine

mk3 cupra ibiza
mk4 golf
audi a3

but then im told the

leon
and leon R have the same engine if this is the case could i not just use a leon engine as they come with 225 standard do then not please correct me if im wrong all this is really interesting me

Leon Cupra 1.8T (AUQ) and LCR (AMK / BAM) Engines differ mainly in conrods/pistons. After that the power difference is down to LC using a K03S turbo and the LCR using a K04, Mike. Different turbo configurations have different downpipes.

ahh so just to make sure the engine units differ by the internals and the turbo and downpipe

but all in all is in the same engine shell

sorry i tried working it out but they all look the same lol

i thought the ideal 1.8T engine was the AGU? as it had forged conrods. the new engine wont come with a turbo.

im wanting best bhp for me money and that will fit straight in out bay lol

check what martin m and roly have done on there readers ride as they both have the 20vt engine.
i expect they both have the same engine codes.

ye agu the same as ibiza_95 i was just wondering because they look the same engine except internals ans thought maybe would be worth a shot but might stick to whats been down for ease and security

probally best to do the tryed and tested you can always change the internals and turbo when it comes to it either way the 1.8t SHOULD be a big step up.

ye ye im hoping so lol and this way anyproblems a few members can help haha

what happened to ABF turbo plan? :(

i decide the engine been turboed was easy / cheaper but ididnt take into consideration the megaspuirt and mapping costs works out cheaper to get new engine and chenge belts etc etc so almost newish and more reliable

Mike,
All the 1.8Ts are virtually the same. The pistons on an AMK and BAM engine are said to be the strongest. The crank and rods on the AGU are meant to be the strongest too... and the head on the AGU is the best because it has large ports. But all in all, which ever engine you put in they are all in effect exactly the same bar the turbo, so when hunting an engine, decide what turbo you want and buy the engine from a car with that turbo config, that simple... only worry about pistons rods and heads if youre going to be going big turbo, as in bigger than a K04 as every 1.8T will cope with 260bhp, which is the rough power of a mapped k04.

The only exception to this is the longitudinally mounted engines which you need to avoid. these are in like the Audi A4s and Passats, its obvious when you look at them... they dont look like mine for a start, inlet and exhausts are on the sides as opposed to the front and back.

All 1.8T engines bar the above have the exact same block, and thus the exact same mounting points, thus any 1.8T will fit no matter what its from.

Youll pay more for a k04 engine than a k03/s but everythings interchangeable

Its a simple really. :D

hmm what sorta money can the whole conversion be done on? and what sorta wiring mods will need to be done?
