Hi folks

My Brother has just recently bought a brand new Ibiza 1.6 TDI. Its only done 200 miles or so.

There seems to be a burning smell that is noticeable only when the car is stationary both in the car and outside the car, whilst the engine is warm. I have managed to locate the burning smell to the rear of the car.

I'm thinking is it just the exhaust wearing in or is there a problem somewhere else? There are no faults on the dash board and the car drives fine.

I have done a search but have not found anything, other than some people believe new exhausts smell of burning to begin with. Have other people had this problem?

Could it be the paint burning around the exhaust?

Any help or information is much appreciated

Many thanks

Tell him to havea read in his manual about diesel particulate filters (DPF) and how they work, its something he should be aware of driving a 1.6 CR.

Also, even if it's not regenerating a brand new car normally makes a sort of burning smell. In perticular the exhaust will have a paint type coating on it to stop rust, keep in mind that the exhaust (and other parts) will have been in a factory and a warehouse before they are ever fitted to the car. If you take an old car for a new exhaust you will get the same sort of smell. It's probably nothing to worry about, every new car I have ever had has made a pong for the first couple of tanks of fuel especially after a motorway run.

Ive just read the information on the dpf but im still unclear on how you know the car is regenerating and when? do you just assume that it is?

A very useful and essential piece of knowledge none the less

many thanks in advance

as above same as Nath, i think its something to do with the exhaust, happened when i had a new corsa and happened when i got my new fr

There is no indicator as such to tell you the car is doing a regen, but you will be able to tell as the engine will idle higher than normal (about 1000 rpm) and the engine will also be running very rough at idle.

There are tell tale signs to an experienced owner but you can't really be sure unless you have Vag-Com. That's another little gem that you can have a search for and a good read about.

Thanks Andyf I have just read that, printed it off and shoved it under my brothers face.

Thanks to everyone for giving me advice on the matter very much appreciated.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Same thing happened to me. No problems since. Its just on the first regen it tends to smell a bit.

Burning Smell

I am experiencing a burning smell as well.

My 1.6 Mk5 Sport is intermittently giving off a 'Burning Rubber' smell, which happens whatever driving style I have been doing.

My car is 6 months old, and has done 10,000 miles, and also has a 'juddering', felt through the pedals, when stopped at junctions.

Took it to the stealers, and they noticed a hunting on the tacho. Suggested it could be the variable mass flywheel, or an injector problem.
Its booked in for next week, along with 10,000 mile service.

Will let you know what the results are.

Also noticed power and economy are down :(

I also have experienced a burning smell inside the car, only once, informed yesterday after 12m service that the car was probably doing a regen, had almost finished when I stopped. Apparently a heater comes on to complete the regen and the fumes are vented out on the passenger side of the car. How they get inside wasnt answered.

Thanks for that keep us updated on any news, I haven't spoken to my brother for a while but ill ask him if the smell is continuing, I think his experience was classic new car scenario and the first regen taking place

UPDATE.

Took the car to the dealer, with the smell and the juddering actually happening.

The technician came out, and took my car for a short run, and we also noticed the rev counter was bouncing, with the juddering. He suggested a bad injector.

Booked the car in for its first service at 10,000, and diagnostics, but it was not 'going wrong', so only service and a 'Software Update' were done.
The software is for 'ECU' so O now have to wait for it to fail again, before any further work is done.

Will update again if it happens or not.

I've just had exactly the same problem on Ibiza ST 1.6 105PS. REALLY bad burning smell after a 10mile journey, so much so, I emptied the car just in-case in went up in flames !! Popped the bonnet and could feel the heat when opening it (being careful not to cause backdraft!). The source seemed to be coming from the back left of the engine, but nothing seemed to be actually burning.

Seat garage told me to call the AA. They arrived 2.5 hours later and the engine was still hot, but they couldn't find anything. They followed me to the Seat Deal, a trip of a mere 3 miles, and again it was absolutley STINKING. The AA man said that couldn't be right on a car that'd only done 360 miles !

Still waiting to hear back from SEAT, in the mean time I've got the CRAPPIEST little Chevvy Spark.. <vom>

Its probably the new exhaust being burnt in.

On a related note, of you haven't already I heartily recommend you read the "all dpf owners read this" thread in the faq section as it'll save you a lot of frustration later on

get the update off seat and that should stop the hunting or at least it did in mine. the smell really does sound like the regen.
