Hi All,

My 2007 Mk4 Ibiza FR TDi (PD130) is due its 6th service soon which includes the cambelt as it will be 4 years old end of January  - the local SEAT dealer has quoted the following and I am interested to hear if you think this sounds in line with your dealer charges? Also, if you had had the above cambelt change what did it cost at SEAT or VAG indie garage??

£424.97 - Major '60k' service
£378 - Cambelt change
£55 - MOT

Total ~ £860

I am assuming the 60k service is more than an oil change at that price?!

Many Thanks,
Simon

A 60k service when carried out through a dealer is a middle service and should include:

oil and filter change
Pollen filter
Check over
Top up of any fluids etc

Average price should be around £225 (dealer) £100 (indie)

A 40k service is the "major" service according to seat guidlines where by all filters are changed and the belt should be swapped.

Major service costs on average should be £300 (dealer) £200 (indie)

And belt change should be around £350 (dealer) £275) (indie)

It depends on which part of the country your in and generally you'll get more from an indie centre i.e higher quality service, extras thrown in which you would otherwise be charged for and alot more will be checked.

Dealers work to a strict service regieme which can sometimes mean very little is checked for instance - the new exeo's first service includes:

Oil change
Filter change
service book stamped
Service light reset

Not much for your £150+!

Indipendent garages work to their own rules and often check far more and go more indepth than they need to but this makes for a higher quality standard which pleases customers knowing they've gone the extra mile.

I know more than most as i've been on both sides of the coin :)

Cheers for that MJ,

So basically every 40K is the major service with three intermediate 10k's inbetween?

I was also wondering about getting a new water pump fitted at the same time... I have read on here that people get it changed with the belt as a routine. I asked the garage about this and they say its only the petrol FR's that need the pump changing with the cam belt every 40k - does this sound right or should I get it changed?

Cheers,
Simon

Seat dealers have:

minor services every 10, 30, 50, 70k

Intermediate services every 20, 60, 100k

Major services every 40, 80, 120k

diesels are just as prone to w/pump failure as the petrols. A new pump is about £20 and 5 minutes to fit with the timing gear off.

this was what i was getting at with regards to the difference between dealers and indies.
i used to work for a dealer and when we did a belt swap you got a belt and a tensioner - the bare minimum (paying £350+ for the pleasure).

Now i work for an indie we always flush the coolant before hand and fit a new timing kit which includes:

belt
tensioner
rollers
dampers (on early pds and 20vts)
water pump
new coolant
aux belt (if requested)

Still cheaper than a dealer, its false economy to not replace eveything while your there.

Imagine how pi55ed off you'd be if in 6months your pump does go?

i didnt realise that the cambelt needed changing at 40k, i thought it was usually 60k plus, is this normal with diesels?

yep, unfortunatley is buddy but better £100s over £1000s i say.

even the belt change intervals for the petrols have dropped.

Hi MJ,

Cheers for all that info on service intervals - its shame your garage isn't in London or I'd be round to give my car the works!!

I understand the economy (and peace of mind!) of getting the water pump done at the same time but how often does anyone see a faliure? I'm just wondering if its something thats pretty much mandatory at the next round of cam belt change (80k) when everythings worn in but at the moment the engines still relatively new? I'm also wondering why the dealer isn't pushing me to add it to the work.

Cheers,
Simon

i would have thought every 60K for a belt, but like mentioned it's better to spend a few hundred (if that, well if you know someone with a garage....) than have a belt snap and bend all your valves or worse.

Do PD engines need a belt every 40k due to the way the injection works and it having another cam that operates the injectors?

vw uk dropped the belt change intervals down for all their engines after a few premature failures. as a result of this most are now recommended to be changed at 40k or every 4 years.

pd engines only have a single cam on the 1.9s which has 8 cam lobes for the valve opening and 4 for the injector presurisation - they are all on the same shaft and are driven by the single timing belt.

the 1.9 pd causes extreme damage when the belts go.

the only reason i can think of dealers not recommending a water pump change with the belt is they hope it fails in the future and they can take more money off you, that or they dont have a very good knowledge of the cars they are working on.

Nice of them to tell us they have changed the life time of the belts. They are quick enough to send out a load of sales rubbish in the post.

I'd get an indi garage to do your belt change and put a water pump on it. Do some re search and get one with a metal impellor instead of the standard plastic one, its sorted then. no need to worry any more.

For me the main reason to get the car serviced with SEAT now its out of 3 year warranty is to help the residuals and make it easy to sell on when the time comes. I think unless people know the garage as a reputed indie it can make the difference for the average buyer, although once a car gets to a certain age people stop worrying about FSH.

In my opinion peolpe are less bothered about the service being done at a dealer but are more concerned that the services have actually been carried out in the first place.

Where its been done makes minimal difference.

I always thought cambelt was every 60k as well!
Even mentioned a few times in a few threads.

If it is now 40k, When did it change? and means mine should be due its 3rd not 2nd and i'm pushing my luck very far!

and agree with the quick to send marketing rubbish but not make car safe info, but guess it means car fails by another!

I have just had a quote for full cambelt kit and water pump, £230 for VAG Technik. Anyone had dealing there, MJ? i see your this way, they are based in Eccles
