Gearbox prob!!

Hi all my 2000 cupra has a problem with its 6 speed box, getting a crunch from first to second and second to third, theres a gearbox specialist near where i live but just want to ask your opinions, whether to recon or replace, ive seen second hand ones going for 600+ all advice greatly appreciated thanks,

My cupra r developed a crunch from 2nd to third and i read that a lot of people on here had the oil changed and it went away. Unfortunately it didn't work on mine and i ended up have the gearbox rebuilt, so the oil change was £100 wasted.

3rd sync was broken in 3 places and ended up needing new 2nd and 3rd gears too. While it was apart, had the crown wheel rivets replaces with bolts too - Total cost all in £740, but all the work was carried out by an ex prodrive friend of mine so not sure how this would compare to a garage...

I think ill sit in a corner and cry if itll cost that much, id prefer to buy a second hand one and take it off the road for a week and swap them over myself, and i havnt done an oil change on mine yet but i wont be paying £100 lol, one hour labour of £25 and 2 litres of tranny fluid at most, if i dont decide to do it myself, Dan

Sorry, should have said - that's including buying the redline gear oil that a lot of people on this forum changed to when they were experiencing the gear change crunch. From memory I think that came to around £50 on it's own, it made my gearbox feel worse though, but some people on here have had success with it. When the gearbox was rebuilt, standard gear oil from the dealer was used, I expected it to be more expensive than the redline, but it was much cheaper.

I also though about buying a 2nd hand gearbox to replace mine, but my LCR had only done just over 55k miles at the time and i didn't have any confidence in a 2nd hand gearbox not going the same way. My theory was that if i was going to pay someone to take it out and put it back in, I might aswell just get the existing one rebuilt properly. The guy who did it used to build gearboxes on Rally cars for pro-drive, builds drag cars etc so I had every confidence in him. It's also the 5th time he's rebuilt an 02m gearbox for people due to broken synchro's :-(

Yeah I realised that within 5 mins of leaving the garage! lol
