Hi all. Im just wondering how loud the turbos meant to be on a pd150? If you open the drivers window you can hear it spooling up when accelerating and when you let your foot off acceletator it almost sounds like theres a very quiet dump valve under there. Is this normal? Its just a bit noisier than my 306 hdi was. I love the sound off it tbh but im just wondering is it normal to be a bit noisey. You cant hear it with drivers windows closed.

I thought exactly the same when i first got my fr. Im sure someone will confirm but its normal, its a vnt (variable nozzle turbo) i think, along with the induction system gives the spooling sound. If you time it right with the dump in a tunnel it sounds good.....for a dirty diesel.

If its a loud hissing it could be a boost leak. Its common for the boost pipes leak on the joints, they are an o ring and clip style, follow your boost pipes in the engine bay and check pipes for oil weepage.

Iv picked all that up from reading bits on here, i think its near enough right but bits could of got lost in translation.

I did start a thread called how does a pd150 turbo work, theres some good links with animations on how the variable vanes work.

Yeah i know about it being a VNT. Ah well fair enough. Nah its not a loud hissing, but you can hear it sucking air in though :D I think its sounds lovely :D Glad its normal. Well using my cheap ebay elm327 bluetooth adaptor and my android phone with torque, it showed it boosting at about 46 inhg (22psi). But i dont think that was full on throttle as the clutch has started to slip. I think i read somewhere the pd150 turbo should be about 24psi standard. Comparing that to the 306 turbo thats about 18psi standard, no wonder its louder lol.

I was only after asking the exact same thing! I thought the sound is similar to a dump valve of a sort. These are meant to peak at 21.7 psi, the 130's at 20 ish.

It's a lovely sound alright. When you let off the throttle with that amount of boost in the system you're bound to hear something anyway!

I thought that I had some kind of leak that only leaks when you've let off the boost due to the hissing sound you get, but it sounds normal having read what ye have to say about it.
