Hello Chaps and Lasses

Well as I thought this year the annual MOT has been hit with a whole heap of extra testing that is likely to see us modifying bunch calling our testers utter blighters!! under our breath when he says "FAIL"... Now don't get me wrong I know the rules are put in place for safety reasons and to save lives, or are they? Could this be a massive economy kick start arrangement the government have with VOSA who then have a deal with the licensed garages to test on more to stuff that will fail thus create more work and revenue??? Who knows but whats making my bum flap and no doubt many of you aside of more anal attention to detail is the following.

Aftermarket Steering Wheels. Fitted to cars that had airbags as OE...MOT man says FAIL!!!!!

Fixed Bucket Seats and Harnesses without OE pre tensioners....MOT man says FAIL!!!!!

Any Dash Light, Airbag, ABS, ESP ect that is not fully functional, that means the old trick of disabling the dash bulb won't fool him, the systems must illuminate then go out if not.... MOT man says FAIL!!!!!

Decat is an old one but relevant FAIL!!!!!

Improper HID instillation including beam set and brightness...MOT man says FAIL!!!!! This also goes for improper coloured bulbs.

So my question to you guys is, has anyone had an MOT after March 2012 when the above before March 2012 would have just been advisory, now After march 2012 they are now a FAIL!!!

I have some mod reversal to do if this is the case, however my tester is a friend I'm not sure as yet how far from the law he is able to stray.

Any experience with the above mods passing or failing yet guys?

Jim

Easy ways to sort the dash lights.

Seats must slide, that is it. keep the OEM Pretensioner and seat belt installed along side your 4 point harnesses

HID's, easy enough to unplug and change a bulb...

My cars fog light ecu light flickers every once in a while... I don't even have fog lights installed surely they wouldn't fail me on that??

harnesses are fine as long as you keep the original belts fitted,

Seats need to move on subframes,

HID's should pass if beam set & less than 6k lumens,

decat- obvious

after market steering wheel - obvious

for the points above im not sure this is any different than before. ABS lights have always been something that needed to work, where people disabled the light this should have always been a fail, but that modern cars pretty much come with ABS as standard so they will commonly know there should be ABS fitted.

HID wise, as far as im concerned its a relaxation of the rules.. as its was thought that not having headlight washers etc made it tehcnnically a fail, but now its not the case, rather that you are allowed to fit these, but are simply having to meet existing riules such as headlight alignment/beam pattern.
Coloured bulbs have always been the case.

I think one thing is that testers have been told you are not raising enough advisories, cars were failing or passing, but not alot in between, so expect more pro-active advisories.

"any products that reduce a lights intensity or change its colour are not allowed"

an interesting comment, - so tinted lights would seem to be an issue. However again how they test for this im not sure. Perhaps its going to be the testers judgement, - it should at least stop people that have massively tinted rear lights that significantly reduce the lights function.

The problem is most of this stuff is all open to interpretation of the tester, this is going to cause massive issues for a lot of people with aftermarket steering wheels, would the mot tester know that certain cars had them as OE and certain ones don't, or mr MOT man may just simply say these rules are all a load of bollocks, if your car is clearly safe and well modified with no signs of stuff bodged then it will pass, so I'll have to solve the dash airbag light and ask my tester about my aftermarket wheel if not, fit the old one :( what a faff! As it stands the rules state if the airbag is missing and it should be there then an aftermarket wheel is a big no no, but on the other hand if it's not there he can't test it, it's a minefield....

Most people read the 'new' rules, yet they don't have a clue about method of inspection. For example if a car has fixed bucket seats with fixed harnesses then it is deemed fit for purpose aslong as the seat is secured with correct fixings, same goes for harnesses. However what vosa don't want is an average fiesta with a broken seat which is designed to move and a harness attached to a show cage/ piece of
Material no greater In strength than a bake bean tin. With regards to steering wheels same applies if a momo wheel is fitted with no airbag and it is clear the car has been designed to run without it ie fixed seats, harness and stripped out then there is no issue. It's when you get a 106 completely standard but with an aftermarket wheel from halford's with the airbag light on and the passenger airbags still fitted etc then there becomes a reason to fail
