I think they were fitted the wrong way (i.e. on wrong side, the spiral should be near the handbrake pivot).

With pliers or can even use hands as the springs are not heavily tensioned.

Yep can do them without tools, just make sure they sit the correct way as per the pic in posts 25 & 26 above

No, they are held by magic
