i took this graph as my engine with brand new turbo fitted blew up:

was it the turbo failing that took the engine out? as there seems a boost spike at the point when the engine went bang.

The 110 bhp engine blew? :-o What is the engine code? Those engines are fairly strong. What mileage and condition, well serviced etc. How did it die? Rod through the block or blown piston crown, head gasket?

Turbo sounds like a reasonable suggestion. Your old turbo gave up, didn't it? Was it missing any fins or bits that may have weakened the engine.

Turbo control mechanism failure?

this is what happened before i fitted the new turbo:

my 03 tolly has just blown its vnt turbo at 87k. first question is this normal? it seems the exhaust side oil seal failed, it had been running for some time with the vnt stuck and overboosting as a result, and making a strange noise on spool down, which must have been the turbo blades catching on the housings. when we got it off there was about half an inch play in the shaft up and down . it seems to have blown the front pipe flexy, due to the oil hydraulic'ing the exhaust system with oil.

so what to do? i was going to buy a new garret vnt from Andrew Pages and hope it will be more reliable than the older turbo, maybe they have redesigned them?

as far as the front pipe was concerned i was going to get a decat, as it should be a cheaper option and make the car nicer to drive.

at the same time im gonna clean the intake and fit a plate to the egr valve connection.

thoughts.

Telling by the graph it seems like you had quite some oil left over in boost piping system/intercooler.

The requested boos it at ambient but suddenly the engine rpm rise very quickly without change in requested boost (change in throttle position).

This leads me to the conclusion that oil was still in the system which got "active" after the first bosst period, sucked into the engine, causing it to rev up and generate the huge boost spike which then killed the new turbo.

You so to say had a engine runaway from improper cleaning out all hoses and the IC before installing the new turbo = user error.

Just get an ALH turbo second hand, often cheaper because people have this illusion that the ASV one is bigger. I've seen good ones going for like £80.

what about the whine i had from the new turbo after the first run. could it be i had a faulty turbo from Garrett? if the runaway was caused by old oil from the previous turbo faliure, will the new turbo still be ok or have i goto get it replaced under warranty?

What state is the engine in?

The warrany people will probably want proof of fitment by qualified or competant technical person and testing of oil properties and all that before they will honour the agreement if everything coincides with their criteria.

the engine had only covered 87k, i bought it with 65k on it. i then started using fully synthetic 5/40w halfords turbo diesel engine oil. the last change, when we fitted the new turbo and oil filter, was mobil 1 td 0/40w.

Did you bleed the oil through before starting the engine? Disconnect the fuel pump, finger on the impeller, return line disconnected and crank till oil came through? Also you're supposed to change the feed line and often companies wont warrant a failure unless that's been done.
Was the oil VW spec? 505.00? Was it VW approved?

I always preferred 10w40 myself and as seatmann says vw505.00 spec. Change it every 5000 miles if you give it the beans or bring the power up. You also have to prime the turbo feedline as has been said.

What I mean is, is the engine kaput now? And how bad? What went wrong, as in what broke in th engine?
