Hi,

I have decided to do the missus' 2009 (mk5) 1.6 Ibiza service myself and having read various posts on this forum ask for some advice as I'm still a bit unsure:

1. Oil I intend to use is Castrol Engine Oil Edge FST Fully Synthetic 5W30 Engine Oil, is this ok?
2. Spark plugs either Bocsh or NKG, whats everyones preferances and which ones would I need exactly for her car?
3. Decided on replacing the air filter with a K&N air filter.
4. Pollen filter, I presume they're all the same?
5. Oil filter, as point 4, they will be all be similar?

Also, was thinking of using a fuel additive, good idea or a waste of £££. If good any recommendations??

Thanks

I'll help you with questions I know about:

1. As regards oil, the container needs to state it meets the appropriate VW spec, which will likely be VW502.00 or VW504.00 (but check your handbook!) there was a detailed discussion of it it here:
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=395671

3. Cotton filters can create problems with MAFs, ensure your car doesn't have a hot-wire MAF before purchasing your K&N; over oiling the filter leads to oil coating the hot wire in the MAF, this will muller it and it's almost impossible to clean without breaking, so then it's nigh on £100 for a new MAF! To be honest, I'd doubt you'd see any performance increase by fitting a cotton filter as the standard paper one is likely significantly oversized for the 1.6 as it's used on more powerful engines (e.g. the paper filter on my PD130 was good for nearly 200 bhp).

4. They do two types of pollen filters, with carbon and without; the carbon one is better as it will remove some smells (I don't know the part codes for the Ibiza, unless they're the same as me 6Y Fabia, but Eurocarparts seem to stock loads for under a tenner that all fit). There is a guide to changing the pollen filter here too:
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=322224

PS: If you get your service bits from Eurocarparts, make sure you input a 20-25% discount code (there are loads on Google)

Ckyliu, you're a gentleman and a scholar, thanks for all the advice.

The K&N filter was nothing to do with increase power etc but more longevity. How would I know if I had a hot-wire MAF, will it say in the service book?

So am I correct that the Castrol Engine Oil Edge FST Fully Synthetic 5W30 is unsuitable for my vehicle? I only selected that after reading various posts on here. Plus I used my registration on the Halfords website and this one of the oils it recommended.

I intend on using EuroCarParts as they appear to have reasonable prices.

To be honest, I don't think the K&N will help with longevity either, cotton filters allow more air flow and they only way I can see that is possible is by doing less filtering or having a greater surface area; if you hold a cotton panel filter up you can see light shinning through it, you don't get that with a disposable paper element type (I know that's hardly scientific but I think it illustrates the point)!

You'd have to Google or look in a workshop manual to see if you're engine gas a hot wire MAF, it's not something they'd mention the handbook (there are two main types of MAF, hot wire and vane meter, although the latter is normally called VAF. There is also MAP, Manifold Absolute Pressure. Obviously you only need to be concerned about the first one).

Personally, I think the best policy is just to replace the boggo paper element filter twice as often as the handbook says unless you're doing some serious engine mods.

Google tells me the Castrol Edge FST Fully Synthetic 5W30 meets Volkswagen 504 00 and 507 00 oil spec, so it is correct for your engine (again, please check the label on the oil container and your vehicle handbook match up).

Cheers for the info Ckyliu, I really appreciate your advice.

More than twice as often.

The service schedule for my TDi says leave it in for 4 years !!!!!! - wtf !!

How can a 4 year old filter be good for the engine or fuel economy !!

How do you get the coil packs out ? I've removed the cover but now I'm stuck, I want to renew the spark plugs on my Mrs' 2009 Ibiza 1.4 sport

Right, what you need to do is unclip the "cable tidy" - if that car has one, I've looked and forgotten but am basing what I'm suggesting on how I change the plugs on an earlier model, but roughly same engine. By unclipping, I'm meaning open up the "cable tidy" so that as you lift the coils up, the wire is free to lift up too. I use two screwdrivers and ease the coils up by applying upward pressure at two diametrically opposite points near the centre of the coil - ie the bit of it that reaches down into the hole in the camchest. When you have eased them all up a bit, at least high enough for them to be free from the plugs, work out which one can be lifted out first, then follow with the next etc. Now you can get a socket onto the plugs. Replacing them is just reverse making sure that they click into the top of the plugs, close the unclipped "cable tidy" bits, refit cover - job done.

You might need to remove the top section of the oil fill spout, fit the cover directly on to the opening further down to save dropping anything in!
