Luk clutch torque limits/warranty

Hi all,

Does anyone know the torque limits of the standard clutch? I was under the impression they should be able to take 300ft ib

I had a new standard Luk clutch and Luk DMF fitted back in May 13. I have covered 20k miles since having it fitted.

I had a r- tech custom map done in Nov 14 with a torque output of 291 ft ib , the clutch is now slipping quite badly. (only done about 6k miles since map)

Should the clutch have gone already? I havnt been flooring it low in the revs either. There is a oil leak which has ran down the gearbox, could there be oil contamination?

I was told i have a 2 year warranty on the clutch and flywheel, but when i took the car back in they refused to carry out the work due to them thinking its been mapped, I quote "seems pretty quick to me" ( they have no proof of mapping, but have drove the car since the clutch work was carried out and remap applied.).

Is my warranty void due to the map, surely they need some sort of proof its not running standard BHP, Is it worth me contacting manufacturer also?

Thanks in advance

Standard OEM Sachs should go to max 331ft lb (or 450Nm). Luk should hold a bit less if Im not mistaken.

There could be contamination if the bell housing hasnt been sealed off properly. I had an oil leak from the rocker cover, but it dripped outside of the bell housing (fortunate for me).

Thanks for the replys.

I thought it was around the 300ft lb mark, im going to contact LUK and try and find out the actual figure.

Ill sort the leak first and take it from there.

I had a leaking cam tensioner seal which led to the same problem, I thought my also LUK clutch was slipping but after fixing the leak its fine

Is that the half moon shape seal?, because this is where the oil leak is coming from.
Hopefully this may be the cause, (knowing my luck though, it wont be).

Cheers for that info/glimmer of hope lol.

If clutch has gone, its the early stages of slipping so hopefully flywheel isnt worn. What do people think about not installing a new DMF and just get the sachs performance clutch plate that Badger5 recommends installed to the current DMF and clutch cover?

Cheers again

yep that's the one, easy fix and you don't " need " the tool either as when at TDC it was able to raise enough to remove the old one and insert the new one.

que the haters telling me I did it wrong as I never paid £11 for a " bolt " that screws into a hole:whistle:

You won't get a figure out of LUK, it's not rated to a certain pressure it's rated to be suitable for it's application, which is an OEM spec car making whatever lb/ft they make. People rate the diesel ones to around 300lbf as this is generally what they seem to cope with at the time, but i've never heard the same figures mentioned on the 1.8T OE clutch.

If you have oil contamination, even if you fix the leak, i doubt the clutch will right itself

Given that standard torque is under 170lb/ft I think you've done well out of the OE clutch and i am not suprised your clutch has had it. You need an upgrade in my opinion, either the B5 recommendation or some other upgrade

Mine also leaked at the half moon seal (twice!). Get a new rocker cover and some liquid sealant (heatproof) for the half moon part.

I would also change the dmf if you're planning on driving the car longer. Big investment now, but better later.

Thought so, i have a guide off here for the replacement of the half moon and gasket, i see from that guide he didnt use the 'special' tool mentioned either.

I think the next setup will be the sachs plate Badger5 recommends with standard duel mass.

This the plan, get the gaskets changed and take it from there.

Upon clutch replacement ill get them to check the flywheel and change if necessary.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Still looking at clutch options... Anyone had experience with the black diamond stage 1 or 2 clutch setups, cant find much info

Also does the sachs SRE organic plate fit to the standard LUK pressure plate, or would the paddle clutch plate be better? Darkside dubs say it doesnt, but they also say the sachs paddle clutch plate is no good with the LUk pressure plate due to it not having enough pressure on the clutch plate. Even though its a tried and tested setup.

Any ideas

Cheers again

Thanks Bill, the standard Luk pressure plate works ok with it too doesnt it?

I do a fair bit of town driving, is this setup ok for that?

Thanks.
