Its unfortunate the Cupra wasn't for you but its not going to be for everyone. The RS will always sound much better in my opinion and its no surprise you found the performance weak as yours is modified as well as the fact a DSG Cupra is effortless and refined.

I'm into month 13 in my DSG Cupra and still love it. I had a manual Mk2 Cupra for four years which I loved and I wouldn't go back to manual. I agree Sport mode does hold onto the gears to long but I use drive mode 99% of the time which is silky smooth and when I want some spirited driving I use manual mode.

There is a argument to be made on which is the best to drive depending on personal preference but the one thing that cannot be argued is the fact that a DSG will always be quicker than a manual.

Regarding the Ring Lap a manual car was used in the SC but I'm pretty sure the ST Lap was a DSG and was quicker than the SC.

ha ha ha

got agree about spelling & English

don't forget on many construction sites

English is now a second language

:D

ps looking for cupra 280 to replace my ageing mk 1 cupra

think list prices are silly

ST was also a manual

I think some people are assuming I've never driven or owned any automatic cars in the past?

After sleeping on the events of yesterday I've woken up to be even more sure of my decision to take the Cupra deal any further yesterday.

I will say however, that the sales manager yesterday should have offered me some sort of contribution to the fact of the time and cost I put into viewing that car. He knew where we were coming from, and he knew how much cost would have been incurred. He was insisting on seeing my car, perhaps I should have insisted that he at least pay for one half of my journey......he did nothing but go to work as normal.

If a manual Cupra ever rears its head within this area I'll probably go and have a drive just to compare it to the DSG yesterday.

I came from RS megane to Cupra after a very positive test drive in the 280 DSG. Have now covered 2700miles in mine and just beginning to get to proper grips with the DSG box and really loving it love the Jekyl and Hyde character. With the soundaktor disconnected the engine note is really nice, granted nowhere near as nice as the ford 2.5 but still not awful.

GL with your car hunting.

I bought my Cupra 280 DSG last month, I agree with the above, DSG in Sport mode is awful. In my opinion the cars pulls harder from low revs in Drive. In Sport mode the gearbox also seems incapable of holding a higher gear for you even if you're not accelerating hard.

I leave my Cupra in Sport (DCC) and D (gearbox). It's a hoot!

Why should the dealership pay you to view their stock? It was your choice to go see a car that was miles from home not theirs. Why not just test drive one nearer home before deciding on the long drive?

+1 on that. Getting paid to travel to test drive cars? I'd have tested all ours somewhere nice by the sea not Birmingham!!!

Respect mate! Seat let you have a Mk1 Cupra R 225 a whole year before they were launched, You must be in the know..... lol

I know what I owned Biker. Why the sarcasm?

As a matter of fact I've just done a reg search. My old 225 Cupra R is still out there somewhere. It was a 52 plate.

There isn't any that was closer, or the spec I wanted. Listen, I've bought enough cars and dealt with enough dealerships to know good customer service. I was hardly a tyre kicker travelling the distance I did, and they knew that. I'd made a massive commitment in time and cost. They did bugger all.

When they insisted on seeing my car I should have asked them to make a small contribution to the journey. I didn't. So it was my mistake.

Can't type in any URL's yet......but Biker questioned what I've said.

Type in Focus RS vs Civic Type R vs Leon Cupra R into Google.

Then search for video results. Look for the Fifth gear video.....

Fifth gear did a hot-hatch test where they pitted the above three against an MG ZR, and Clio etc. I remember I'd actually put my deposit down on the Cupra before seeing this road test. Mine was one of the first on the road in Teeside. Traded in my Vectra Gsi V6 for the Seat. Or maybe I just imagined it all according to Biker?

The Cupra R 225 wasn't launched till 2003, I know as I bought one of the first ones on the road in the North East. Ordered it June (I think) 2003 and took delivery November 2003.

On a 52 plate your car would be a Cura R 210.

With the DSG box, I think it's a love it or hate it scenario. Perhaps a local dealer wth a manual is another option? (Dare I say it: VW Golf R?)

Well I bought Thehulkster's reject, and all I can say is I'm glad he didn't buy it!

I guess it wasn't the car for him, I was coming from a totally different angle, owning a BMW 530d GT (aka barge), and wanting something that felt like it actually wanted to be driven quickly rather than persuaded!

The car is a credit to it's previous owner and spotless. Love the technology, and apart from all the other discussions about DSG or Manual, if you want adaptive cruise then DSG is the only way to go! Can't see the point of Adaptive and a manual as as soon as the required speed drops too much you have to change gear, meaning you've cancelled the cruise control!

With the DSG you can go from your set speed down to a standstill and as long as the traffic moves off within a couple of seconds you're away again without doing anything. Might seem alien to some, but for me it's perfect on the daily grind to and from work!
