Hi guys

Searched online for days and still not found anyone with the same issue

Most people have a rattle on startup/idle

I also get this but along with a rattle on part throttle , underload there is no rattle but if i was to accelerate gentle past 3k i get a proloned rattling which appears to be intune with the engine revs as they rise.

Its done it since i bought the car in feb.

My money is on cam chain tensioner but would also like to know if anyone else has had this issue and also other things i can have checked.

Thank you!

The 2.0T engines in the Mk2 Leon use a cambelt not a chain.

The oil pump and counterbalance shafts are chain driven at the other end of the engine and the tensioner on that chain is a common cause of low RPM rattling from the engine.

Thanks for the reply , i was aware of the belt and the chain but noone seems to share the rattling through the rev range.

Any further ideas?

No worries, just wanted to make sure you were aware it was a cam belt and not a chain as you mentioned cam chain in your first post.

Have you ruled out loose components / heat shields, etc. in the engine bay?

Yeah the cambelt initially turns the 1 cam and on the transmission side the chains turn both cams via chain

Nikli at rtech also menioned it and said it sounded like it was coming from the cam area and that hed never heard one make the rattle on partial throttle.

It cant be too serious as its done it for over 1500+ miles but i want it resolved

Im suspecting the cam tensioner but i want to rule other things out by checking

Thanks for your help rusty

Ah I get you - the chain drive on the VVT hub on the inlet cam.

I can't think of anything else that might cause a rattle from the top end if everything is otherwise in good mechanical order.

It coped with some r tech love on the rollers for 4 hours and didn't go bang so im confident internals are strong lol

Thanks anyway, its a mythery!

Does sound like the cam chain tensioner. Until the engine warmed up mine used to rattle through the rev range, was worse in cold weather. I had the chain/tensioner replaced and it stopped it.

You've put my mind at ease aha

Pulled fine throughout the rev range still?

Yeah, but it definitely needed changing. Would recommend you at least get it diagnosed, much cheaper than if it jumps timing :cartman:

Think it cost £330 all in, bit on the expensive side but had the convenience of the garage being 5 minutes from work so it was all done in the day and ready to go home.

Garage suspect very slight play in small end bearings in cylinders 2+3 , wounded

Looks like a rebuild is on the cards hopefully internals are fine and just needs new bearings and piston rings mileage is 81k

Fixed!!! No small end rattle , had my timing chain replaced rattle has gone! Dont be fooled this can rattle throughout the entire rev range if you have a rattle whilst in high rpm get this checked too!

I notice this has been resolved, however how did the mechanic diagnose your bearing in cylinders 2+3 were gone? By ear?? :cartman:

I have been speaking to my local VW tuner, and they recommended uprated internals when you are around the 350 bhp mark, not saying the standard internals are crap, the car would be able to run higher boost much safer.

Suspect the knock was my big end bearings which i had replaced, being the bwj i saw it had ap rods in as standerd when he took the sump off
