My steering wheel is worn smooth after 110k miles and it slips out of my hand.

Are the covers which just fit over the steering wheel good enough or should I sew on a new cover?

Is the wheel leather?? If it is

Chances are the steering wheel just needs a clean. Years and years of use leaves the wheel smooth and gives the impression that its worn due to build up of grease and dirt.

A few clean cloths , a decent leather cleaner and a few hours of elbow grease will have it looking like new.

Not sure if it's leather, it's the standard mk2 FR steering wheel

Its leather

Start by buying some cheap leather wipes and go around the wheel, then move onto a leather cleaner. It will take a few hours and make sure you keep turning over the cloth.

I just used liquid hand soap on mine, rubbed it with cloth then dipped the cloth in clean water to remove residue and it came up really nice once it dried.
