I don't think VWG have a gearbox specification on gear oil, just a part number on the bottles, and even they don't show the oil grade usually

Yeah I phone my local dealer and he was like it just says gear oil I was like okay what viscosity he was like it Dosent say gave me the part number tho.
Castrol recommended 75-80 transmax manual oil
What would be you’re recommendations

When I changed all the oils in my leon X-perience I just went off whatever it said on the Millers oil website.

What millage have you done? I changed the gearbox oil on my wife's car a few months ago. It was at about 65K miles. The oil that came out looked pretty good and it made zero difference to the feel of the gearbox.

Unless you're on very high millage I wouldn't bother. The manual gearboxes on these cars are very reliable.

The OE oil is VW G 052 527 A2
You can buy a Ravenol replacement that meets this standard. Millers will also be good.

Even if it looks good, it doesn't mean it still has all of its characteristics..
Yes, I get that. That's why I changed the oil on my wife's car as she wants to keep it for a long time. I figured it was a sensible precaution. And I guess it is, won't do any harm, but is it necessary? I don't think so.

Most people never change the gearbox oil, don't even give it a thought, yet reports of manual gearbox issues are virtually unheard of. When I bought the oil from the dealer they said they'd never seen a manual gearbox failure.

Like I said, it's not going to do any harm but unless you're on very high millage or intend keeping the car for a long time I don't think it's going to achieve much. And the oil is not cheap. Plus there is the risk you won't do it right! A slight leak from your drain plug will end in tears.

Changed my gearbox oil around 90k miles and made a noticeable difference in shift quality.
I was hoping for the same. My wife's car has always felt a but notchy into the lower gears. It was on about 16k when we got so I thought it might smooth out but it never did. I hoped the oil change might help but it made no difference.

Don't get me wrong, it's not 'bad' but you notice it coming from the other Leons. I think they've changed something on the gear lever of the facelift cars.

Lots of plastic in the MQB gear linkages (gearbox end) - vs the older metal levers/pivots.
My plastic is a little worn so there is some slop, I fitted a new saddle (white plastic slipper pad) which helped but I also I intend to fit new levers and re-set gear lever, see if that helps with gear change. also the dog bone mount is supposed to help with gear change feel.

I experienced the same on my girlfriends 1999 VW Lupo (1.4 16v) at the time

@SuperV8 it does! On my Cupra no different with the Powerflex insert. Makes shifts faster & snappier at the expense of some NVH

On my Seat Leon 1M I changed:
- Dogbone to Powerflex bushings
- Short shifter linkage (shorter front to back throw)
- Shift cable bushings to brass bushings
- Shift knob to Forge Big Knob (was about 800 grams if I am not mistaken)

This made a HUGE difference. No slop, very engaging and the bigger shift knob made it easier to throw the gear lever

@Mr Pig also check if you can adjust the shift cables. On the 1M you could "reset" the shift cables
