Hi guys,

I’ve recently bought my first Leon (2020 5F8 ST FR Black Edition, diesel) and I’m thinking about getting 19” rims for summer. Is it possible, and if so, what specs should I look for?

I’d like to avoid spacers because of legal reasons.

I have in my buying OEM 18’ inch FR rims, but the bigger is better ;)

My 2014 Cupra came with 19" rims as standard and I think all seats run 5 * 112 bolt pattern. As the Cupra is lower I would have thought they would fit the FR hopefully somebody can confirm.

Yeah, on paper they should, the question is with what parameters? Rim width and offset (ET) number

These are the standard wheel spec variations fitted by Seat to the mk3 Leon according to the wheelsize.com website;

If you use an offset calculator such as the one at the link below on www.willtheyfit.com website and input your existing wheel / tyre spec together with the spec of your preferred 18” or 19” wheel options, the calculator will give you the important numbers (e.g. differences in tuck and poke, speedo reading errors, and differences in ride height etc.) so you can see if there’d be any fitment issues.

You could also check out various alloy wheel retailer websites such as https://www.rimstyle.com. If you input your vehicle details and search on your preferred wheel size, design etc. the search results should only show you wheels that will fit your car. Once you’ve found a size and style you like, you could use the offset calculator again and compare the differences between your existing set up and preferred new set up to see if there’d be any fitment issues.

19" look great, but you also sacrifice a little comfort, be aware of that. You can mitigate this a little by choosing "touring" tyres instead of a "sports" tyre, but then you are also sacrificing some handling.

This is my 2015 Cupra ST on the stock 19". No spacers, 235/35/19 tyres

A tiny bit tucked in

And on my MM MM-06 19" wheels. No spacers, but has 225/35/19 tyres, which doesnt look great I think. It needs the 235/35/19.

I didnt note the specs of these wheels, I will try to check this later this week

We've had three Leons and ran wheels from 15 (winter steel), 16, 17, 18 and 19 inch. In my opinion the best size is 18 inch.

The Cupra actually has slightly softer suspension than the FR so 19 is not uncomfortable for daily driving on a Cupra. It feels similar to an FR on smaller wheels except that turn-in is a bit sharper. The issue is that nothing can change the fact that you've got less rubber to protect you so when you hit a pot-hole by heck you know about it! Cracks had been repaired on the 19'' wheels on my Cupra and if you Google you'll find it's a common problem. The wheels are just too big to deal with typical UK roads. They must be a nightmare in the city. Bottom line is that they don't feel balanced. You've got behavior which is absolutely fine most of the time but shocking bangs through the car when you hit a bad bit of road. They would be worse on the FR.

18'' gives you a fairly sharp driving experience while still having enough rubber to take all but the biggest hits. The just give a really good balance on the FR, providing of course you use the right tyres. They're more important than the wheels. The two tyres I really like are Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 and Michelin PS4. The difference between these guys and a lesser tyre is the difference between a great handling car and one that feels like it's not set up properly.

The only reason I would but 19'' wheels on a Leon is that you really want the look and don't care how the car drives or if you damage the wheels. 18'' might not be that much smaller but it's enough. Goldilocks size in my opinion.
