Hi all

Just had the ABS/TPS lights come on, the OBD reader is shower the G45 front right sensor.

I fitted a new one, seemed really good quality, the old one disintegrated when I removed it. Yet the fault remains.

Is this a sensor that requires it be OEM or does generic work?

My thoughts are, look at the wiring next, but it seemed fine but then there is something about a magnetic stripe in the rotor? But I don’t know much about that.

What would the advice be please?

So it doesn't give any expanded explanation like "electrical fault" "implausible signal" etc?

VCDS Wiki definition

00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45)

00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45): Signal Outside Specifications

00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45): Electrical Fault in Circuit

00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45): Open or Short to Plus

Possible Causes

  • Open Circuit in Wiring from/to ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45)
  • ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45) faulty

Possible Solutions

  • Check Wiring from/to ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45)
  • Check ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45)

Special Notes

  • When found on VW Passat 3B (1998-2005): Often seen when mismatched salvage or rebuilt ABS electronics have been installed. Before proceeding with any other troubleshooting, check the ABS electronics part number seen at address 03 on a VCDS Auto-Scan and verify fitment using the ETKA or PL24 parts catalogs or contact a dealer parts department. Also verify the part number physically stamped on the ABS hydraulic block either matches that of ABS electronics module seen at address 03 or is a valid "repair kit" for that hydraulic block.

00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45): Mechanical Malfunction

Possible Causes

  • Excessive Air Gap between ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45) and Rotor
  • Short Circuit in Wiring from/to ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45)
  • ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45) faulty

Possible Solutions

  • Check ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45) Installation
  • Check Wiring from/to ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45)
  • Check ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Front Right (G45)

Thanks for all of that.
So obviously not 100% sure which one it is though.
The sensor has been replaced, how would I specifically check the wiring?

If you buy a better code reader that shows the expanded definition then it'll give you a better indication of where the problem lies.

It’s been fine up to this point but it appears there are only 3 solutions.
1)sensor
2) fitment of sensor
3) wiring

1 and 2 are sorted, so it really only leaves my question of how to test the wiring.

The issue could also be mechanical, the pick up ring could be heavily corroded or cracked.

Checking the wiring will require a multimeter. You'll have to remove the plug on the sensor and at the ABS control module, then carry out a resistance check between the two points.

Honestly though, a better code reader like OBDELEVEN, VCDS or a Maxscan VAG405 will give you a more accurate direction to explore.

I had the same problem with an audi tt i was sorting for someone, replaced the sensor and no different, same code, ended up being the wiring all the way back to inside the engine bay was black and green corroded copper, had to cut and splice in a full new wire for it and the code and light went away.

Ok
So I have a multi meter.
I've not looked yet, is the other end of the Abs sensor wiring easy to get to?

And the magnetic rotor ring? So the sensor seems to be aligned with part of the hub with lots of square holes. Is this the ring, is there any mileage in given this a light sanding then or look to replace the hub?

The wiring on the other end is the big plug on the ABS module.

Have you got a picture of the Hub where the sensor picks up from?

What wire did you use?

Wouldn't it be easier just to replace the wiring loom?
Not check prices or availability yet though.

How do you get to the plug on the abs unit? Top or bottom of the car, easy to find??

i had to get a new wire from the scappers, i cut it right off 4 inches from the big plug thats on the back of the abs unit facing the strut tower (in the engine bay), heres a picture of the actual wire you can buy, its fairly cheap but i needed it quickly, if this is your problem then youd need to either cut and splice the wire like i did or de-pin the wire from the big plug on the abs unit.
