1.4 8v engine conversion's

after finally agreeing i cant get any power from mods im thinking about an engine swap.
firstly what is needed ? and what engines will fit in easyily ?

well, you might aswell go vr6 route imo , 1.8t conversion seems to be more complicated interms of of getting them set up sweetly, vr6 lump is plenty of power and engine and boxs are cheaper than 1.8t engines in good nick

I just wouldn't bother when you can pick up a 2.0 8v for a few hundred quid... Just sell the 1.4, and buy the 2.0 with the same money

what do i need to buy ? e.g gearbox obviously but what about any extra wiring?

you cannot afford to insure a GTI, but you think you will be insured on a 1.4 Ibiza with a VR6/1.8t etc?

well if you are gonna drive without declaring it, might sound harsh, but hope you get caught!!!

why our insurance nowadays is so high, people who do mods like this without declaring them, then crashing!

I couldn't afford a GTI (like many others) so we saved, and got a bit older, I would do the same!!!

only thing you could possibly get away with without anybody knowing any different is to mess around with the gear ratios. but as suj says, if you dont declare it you deserve to be caught as its illegal and voids insurance.

doing it legally and declaring it you will need :

engine and gearbox
wiring loom
ecu
driveshafts
brakes/hubs
front subframe
fuel pump
clocks
maybe fusebox too.

but your insurance would be twice as much as buying a vr6 golf.

well i wouldnt put a vr6 in it would be a polo engine. id be more than happy to have 100bhp and insuring it wouldnt be too high

if your only after an extra 40hp you might aswell just leave the engine in as you wont really have that much difference in performance. not sure if anybody has ever done throttle bodies on a 1.4 before but that should get you upto your target but could be expensive.

tdi swap?? 90hp tdi will keep up with 100hp petrol. plus it would be cheaper to insure if you declared it to DVLA as a tdi ibiza. plus theres options for more power in the future.

i dont want a tdi... im keen on port and polishing as i have my car thats gonna be scrapped so i have a spare throttle body if it all goes wrong. how much power would i gain from this ?

need 4 bike throttle bodies to replace the standard intake, gain about 30% power i think, depending on how well it works. im no expert on the subject. or many other subjects for that matter....

make about 1 to 2 hp difference because of the size of the engine. porting and polishing costs about 5-700 quid and gains about 15 to 20% power, for that cost you could spend that on the difference in insurance for a gti or valver. besides forced induction or throttle bodies there isnt really much gain to get from a small engine. when i had my 1.4 i thought alot about turbocharging it on a small budget (about 300 quid as i can make it all myself) until i realised you would need to get an aftermarket ecu to make it work. at safe boost level (10psi) you would be getting about 110 to 120hp.
