1.4 MPI engine sound

Hi guys, apologies for posting this here if its in the wrong place but the 52 plate 1.4 MPI Ibiza Chill we just got our daughter sounds like an FR when started from cold. Just like a diesel. Is this a fault, and if so can I fix it myself guys?

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

It's been covered a few times before.

Something to do with the design of the engine and tappets IIRC.

Nothing you can do about it!

a good oil change and an engine flush has curred ours, sounds very good!

mine also sounded loud. Sounds like a DERV doesn't it

No you won't it'd bankrupt her and then take her through a hedge one dark wet night.

yeah must be an engine design fault cos my ibiza does it and my old polo with the same engine did too!

its the hydraulic tappets to push the oil around the engine... just a design, but sounds horrid

mine sounded like that too, then it blew up and the one i put in after that sounded the same!

So they all do it and some blow up but it may be cured by an engine flush and new oil lol.... OK so we are not alone.... Anyhow guys, thanks, a DIY service is planned for when we collect it, any horrors to be aware of that make a service awkward? I plan a major service but I have no idea what oil and plugs to use, any experiences and help would be good from you guys in the know

just check the gearbox out had to replace mine on my polo (same engine) dues to flimsy plastic bearings apparently?

I'm on my third and i dont drive it like a cupra! 5 miles to work and back and thats it really no mod's, and i have a spare waiting!

Yes I have seen your gearbox Posts Macker but I am focussed on the oddly dieselish sound from the 1.4 MPI motor really, hope you find the root cause soon, thats really not good....

I giving my car a damn good service with oil flush every filter every belt and bearings that were required, injector cleaners, fuel additives nothing solved its just the sound of the engine!

hi mate, yeah i've got a 1.4 too mate, as has been said it's the hydraulic tappets that make all the noise and make it sound like a DERV, its worse when the oil is cold, its nothing to worry about, and isn't a problem, just something you have to live with really.

Yea thats the feelin I'm gettin Macker, TBH its not a bad sound as long as its not harmful, kind of FR'ish but without the Go!

Cheers Artemis, I'll try 5w40 fully synthetic and see how it responds.
