1.4 petrol is a slug!

I have a 2004 1.4 Ibiza petrol and find that you have to be so heavy footed for it to move anywhere from a stop and really is not nippy. Also my fuel is shcoking, one full tank lasts around 210 miles before the fuel light comes again! It's costing me a bomb to run and I just don't know why it's drinking fuel. I try to drive as eco as possible by not slamming down the right foot but still it drinks fuel. Any thoughts?

I have the same car as yours but a 3 door...Try venting the tank when filling up, i did and got 352 miles to half a tank..:p.

Please could you explain what 'venting the tank' means please? I don't have a clue :S

you will be suprised as the pd130 FR is group 8 ;) and the pd100 is lower

as for venting do a search you will find loads.

Insurance group 8 :O At a push the most I can have is insurance group 4/5 and thats already hefty enough!

Yes the 1.4 75PS does tend to give the worst of both worlds - low power AND not very good MPG. Mine you, my wife gets an average of 46MPG and she does not hold back and travels on "hilly" roads. Your original quote for a full>low fuel warning is a bit poor, but do you use the car for lots of short jouneys? Personally I'd avoid the force feeding fuel route as I've been told that with petrol cars it can/will eventually lead to stuffing up the carbon fume capture system and bring on a warning light. Out of interest, exactly how much fuel can you re-fill it with after the warning light comes on - warning light means about 5 litres left in the tank (I think) - find out what the tank capacity if (I've forgotten at the moment) and see if the sums stack up.

It might just be my lifestyle then... I tend to do around 10 4 mile journeys a day due to my work so it may possibly be that I only use my car in built up towns/cities and never really get above 30

ive got a 04 1.4s 5dr, and im getting 300+ miles to a tank, and i too do alot of short journeys throughout the week rather than long motorway miles.

Something sounds a bit wrong there, pop in a garage and see what they say?

as for the performance, ive come from driving a 95reg 1.1 106, so the ibiza does seem to pull more, but ive have noticed you have to get it to above 3k revs before it starts to really accellerate anywhere quick....

It sounds like your engine is probably due a service?!?! How old are the plugs, air filter oil etc etc. Is yours the 75hp 1.4? I have the later 85hp and find it quite nippy for around town etc, and it's amazing on fuel. I easily get 50mpg doing city driving, around 45 if I have to sit in loads of traffic... Easily getting 330 miles to a tank of fuel. I wouldn't bother venting the tank on an unleaded either!

Sounds like the original posters car may need a service but I think it's probably more to do with driving style/wrong gear type thing. These petrol engines seem to get better power/MPG if kept up in the 3k RPM area. If you strain it at 2k RPM all the time it does no good.

Give the air filter a blow job with an air line/fit a new one, check your tyre pressures and switch off the AC.

Probably a stoopid question, but how do you know which one you've got in any given Ibiza? Is there a VIN number boundary? What's an 06-plater likely to have?

I don't quite get these numbers, I'm averaging 48 MPG and I'm getting on average 70 - 80 more mileage from my tank! - Most times I'm over 400 to the tank... from my last fill up I'm sitting on 220 and I'm just over the the marker for half full.

The 85PS 1.4 engine is an FSI engine and the 75PS 1.4 engine is not, latterly, the 75PS has been kept for use with auto boxes I think.
