1.8 tsi turbo failure

Hi,

My MY16 1.8 tsi developed some unusual noises during part throttle accelleration, initially as a bit of a whine and eventually developing into a rattle. The performance seemed ok and the garage initially suspected the DSG but they have just called to say that there is an issue with the turbo.

Additionally the water pump needed replacing due to it leaking coolant down the block, although the levels were still ok.

Has anyone else had a turbo failure on this engine as google isn't turning up much.

You might have a lemon there. I was under the impression that the 1.8 has been around a while and is relatively refined with a little issues

2 or 3 owners of 2015/2016 VW Polo GTI's on uk-polos.net forum have had turbo failures. The engine in the Polo GTI is the 1.8 EA888 unit, which I think is the same engine as 1.8 in the mk3 Leon (Polo GTI has a slightly higher power output). I don't know if the turbo that's fitted to the Polo GTI and the mk3 1.8 Leon is the same though.

There were a batch of turbos that were replaced by audi and VW on 2.0 cars - part number 06K 145 702 T starting from 2014/15. Rumour was that the stop/start caused wear and play in the turbo shaft bearings. Not sure that this is correct though. There have been a number of revisions of turbos over time. The 1.8 turbos have (or had) a part number ending in 701 T. There have been a small number of reported failures as SRGT says.

Here are some revised part numbers for the 1.8 turbo as at Dec 2016:

06K 145 701 J
06K 145 701 L
06K 145 701 M
06K 145 701 N
06K 145 701 S
06K 145 701 T
06K 145 713 E
06K 145 713 F
06K 145 713 G
06K 145 713 J
06K 145 721 C
06K 145 721 H

I think it would be of general interested if you were able to find part numbers and any revised version fitted to your car if you can persuade the dealer to part with them.

That's an interesting comment, of all the car's I have owned over the years I have never had a turbo problem, but my last 2 cars, the only ones with Stop/Start fitted had blown turbo's, most recently a 2013 Qashqai with only 28,000 miles on the clock and no hard driving...... maybe just a coincidence.

Thanks. Interesting to see that some Polos have had similar problems. Mine has only done 10k of gentle miles so it seems odd for it to fail.

I did ask the dealer about part numbers of the old and new but he suggested that it there wasn't an updated part number and that it was just a very rare failure. When I go in I'll double check.

It would make sense, the cause of this type of wear is normally oil starvation. Stopping the engine with a hot and still spinning turbo (like accelerating up to some traffic lights then stop/start switches off the engine) evaporates the oil and the bearing run dry. Its why lots of folks fitted turbo timers to their Imprezzas and EVOs back in the day...

I'd have thought that VW had resolved that before introducing a technology that would cause it - hardly an unknown issue. Are the oil pumps on our engines electrical or mechanical? Electric pumps would solve it.

Luckypants, your explanation makes sense. Turned the start/stop off on my car with VCDS from day 1. It only goes on for dealer visits! Might have done something right.

I didn't get to find out the part number of the turbo that failed, but the new turbo was listed as a 06K 145 721G.
