From what I have gathered, there are very limited options as to what you can have.

- PD160 intake with Pipercross/Green Panel Filter
- BMC CDA Induction (very costly)
- Green Cotton Single Cone
- K&N 57i Induction Kit

Are there anymore options out there? Or is it a case of don't be stingy and buy the parts?

Pipercross do a induction kit which is about £80. Which i found better as it's a
foam induction cone rather that a fibre one like the k&n induction kits.
Also with it being foam it isn't as oily which can block up your mass air flow
sensor like the k&n.
 
Deffo watching thread, hopefully you get some good answers as I am in the same boat, I won't be doing the pd160 intake as I can't see the value and I don't think it's been proved to make a difference, it's the same size hole at the front so all the wider pipe does is slow air down not let more in lol

make the hole wider at the front then!...thats what i have done, half the hole is blocked off, i cut that bit out....you are right though, makes minimal difference i think, but i got mine very cheap...so pointless paying 70 odd quid for it
 
If u got it cheap then fair play, I have cut the flap out of my existing front piece so that's as big as it can go now, anyone know how to remove the lower part of airbox

yep 20 quid with green panel filter....

think it does make some difference, but other induction kits may provide better gains

Yeh it's probably 98% filter and 2% trumpet gains lol
we need some more replies from people with other filters for advise, don't really hear of tdi's with open cones
 
no you dont...i have got at-back and milltek downpipe/decat on way this week so that gives an alright noise and ok gains
 
Previously I was running a drilled airbox and Green planel filter. Sounded good but I wanted more....

I now have a universal open cone filter from Halfords and its great! Cost £30. Needed to buy some bits to make a bracket but that was only about another £10 in total.

Looks good mike, you got the name/part number for that? I have loooooooads of vouchers that can be spent in halfords :)

and that looks like it's a straight fit on aswell,

can you pm me as to how you removed the lower airbox please :)
It has a weird bolt behind the battery

To use a BMC CDA you'd need to lose the battery to the boot to route the intake pipe.

Open cone filters take in air from under the bonnet, which is absolutely useless. The idea is to get cold air in.

I used to have a "universal" cone filter I got from ebay for £20 - I have since seen the same one in halfords.

It came with some different sized rubber collars to fit most intakes, and I had to make a mounting bracket to fit. I also left the standard cold air feed in place to give it some fresh.
But I did`nt like the sound it gave off, it made the engine too loud imo, and I did`nt notice any gains so I removed it and went for a K+N panel filter and 160 intake - quieter and I noticed a slight gain with them.

The air has to go through a hot turbo, then an intercooler before it gets blown up! Surely a good intercooler set-up will cool the air to the same temps?

After a good blast, the filter is always cool to the touch....

Sound reasoning aside from the fact when you buy a PD160 intake you also get the new funnel part at the front so the intake is larger. Yes that still fits into the same hole in the lock carrier but as that is much larger than either pipe it makes no odds.

The main point is the intake into the bottom of the box is the same size, so only if the standard pipe is restricting the airflow to that connection is it worth changing. Im guessing that SEAT found it was on the PD160 and thus they produced a different pipe.

Trust me, it will make a difference. When external temperatures increase by 10deg i notice a difference in how well my car goes and ive got a SS cooler on there. Now think how much more heat there is going to be trapped under the bonnet than outside of the car.

You look at all the DERV's running hybrid turbo's. How many do you see using a set up other than PD160 with green filter? Very few if any. It's a proven solution.
