10-40w oil in PD130?!

Lo all,

Just had my car serviced at the 40k, got home and read through what they had done and noticed they've charged me for 10-40w oil which i guess has gone into the car....

Now ive only driven it 30 miles since but ive got a 600 mile journey at the end of next week ahead of me so is this a bad idea with this type of oil in it?

The most annoying part to this all is i stated very very very clearly i wanted full seat approved parts which by the looks of it hasnt happened. However, ive already started to write a letter with the evidence to post to the garage manager asking for a refund, but its gonna have to wait cos im getting married this weekend so sweet timing by them to mess it up.

I always thought that the pd130 and 150 should be filled with 5w40 not 10w40
I certainly have 5w40 in my cupra tdi.

Ps is 10w40 mineral oil and 5w40 fully synthetic?

What matters is whether the oil meets the VW 505.01 spec. If it does, you should be fine.

Good luck with the wedding btw :)

thanks for the posts guys, i found out its eurolite oil (phoned the garage) but looking on the internet, it seems for 505.01 spec it has to be 5w-40 not 10w-40. Interestingly though ive noticed the engine oil gets hotter much quicker than before which to me is quite helpful as i do quite a lot of short trips.

The only thing ive heard about 505.01 is that it ensures long term durability of the sliding contact at the injector cams....wow sounds impressive but i dont have a clue what it does!

Why are you writing a letter? To be honest I'd ring the garage up and tell them you want the car picked up, put on the back of a truck, the oil replaced with the proper oil and the car dropped back to you. While the car may run fine, who knows if the longevity of the engine has been affected???

I'm with you on this. The 505.01 oil spec is designed to protect the camshaft / injector lobes where the oil is subjected to it's maximum shear factor. 10w 40 mineral, non 505.01 oil is bad news.

This really makes me angry! Oil selection is so important with todays engines, they are designed to use certain oil for a good reason.

Not only is the grade important but the specification is crutial, the additive packages within newer oils changes from one to the next. I blame the older generation of mechanics that still live in monograde world. I've just had a mega pain with my engine using roughly 1ltr of oil in 80 miles. No external leaking and no smoke.

Turns out my garage have been using 10/40 rock oil in my Zetec SE engine. Running like that for 2 years ensured my oil control rings were well and truely blocked.

40 Ltrs of brand new correct oil and some strong detergents later my engine is not using excessive oil anymore.

Valuble lesson for me then, choose your garage carefuly!

With VW's specs are there for a reason, they should be observed at all times.

If in doubt or in trouble, the get you out of the poo solution is the all embracing (bar the W12 engines) VW504.00/507.00 which covers all current petrol and diesel specs including the PD ones. Castrol Edge 5w-30 is an example of this oil.

Cheers

bloody hell! that garage is no where near me as im off work for nearly a month. I need the car for my wedding/honeymoon....will it be ok to run for the next 700 miles?

can anyone please recommend an engine oil i can grab from halfords that would meet the spec and not cost the same as a small house like the seat oil does.

lastly is it easy to change the oil on these? i havent looked for the sump plug as its covered underneath the car, any guide or rough instruction where to look would be great.....would i need to change the oil filter as well? so far ive only done 100 miles on the 10w-40

Lesson learnt is not to go back to that garage, when i come back from honeymoon ill write a letter

You need to change that oil asap under no circumstances run it for 700 miles !

I don't think Halfrauds sell 505.1 spec oil your best bet would be to find a local motor factors that stocks Miller oils or bite the bullit and get the proper VAG stuff from your local VW dealer.

I stand corrected, I remember looking at that stuff a few weeks ago when I was looking for oil for the Missus Scenic dci isn't it like £47 for 4 litres or something like that I couldn't believe the price !

go to a ford dealer (plenty around) and get the oil for the galaxy 130tdi should work out around £30 just make sure they give the vw spec oil. you could take it to a quick fit/autocentre type place for speedyness as they dont charge a lot for an oil change.

Stuff that! Get the correct oil from VW and go back to the place that messed up the first service. Get them to drop the oil FOC and invoice them the bill for the new oil. If they refuse get in touch with trading standards or CAB. Your engine isn't as cheap as another service done properly, so remind them before they get a bill for a new engine.
