whilst i was away on holiday my dad got hold of some 105 aircraft fuel!!! this was intended for our classic gt6 that originally ran on 5 star fuel! the tank was virtually full anyway on that so he put the rest in my car as it was basically empty. i drove it and didnt feel that different, although i had been away for a week the car felt very fast. after i filled up with optimax after i was nearly out of the 105 im pretty sure the car is fastewr than ever it picks up so quick and puts me in my seat so much more.

Does anyone think that the 105 octain has mixed with the optimax and increased the fuel to about 100 or is it just me thinging it is faster. if it is doing something ill get him to get me a gallon and ill mix it with the optimax!!!!

DO NOT PUT AVGAS IN YOUR CAR!!!!!!

Yes, your car will run very well on it. For a short while.

Avgas is leaded, so I'm afraid you've f*cked your catalytic converter.

Besides, do you know what the price of avgas is? As soon as you start buying it, you'll forget about wanting to put it in your car.

its unleaded as the person whos plane it is had and unleaded conversion done on it and the fuel this person gets is tax free so very cheap i personally wouldnt have put it in but i was out the country!

No, avgas is LEADED.

Check my avatar. I know what I'm talking about when it comes to aviation-related stuff. Your friend's aircraft has been modified to run on what we call "mogas", which is just the name we use for ordinary petrol. It's exactly the same as the stuff you buy in a petrol station.

Please, anyone reading this thread - take my advice. DO NOT PUT AVGAS IN YOUR CAR.

If you turn up at any airfield in the UK and ask to buy some fuel, you will probably not be served. But if you are, there are only two types of aviation fuel available:

  • "Avtur", otherwise known as Jet-A1. This is what jet engines run on. Your petrol engine simply won't work on it.
  • "Avgas", otherwise known as 100LL. Your petrol engine will run on this because it is similar to petrol, but you will ruin your engine pretty quickly. And it is LEADED.

As a side note to anyone with a diesel engine, your engine probably WILL run on avtur, but only for a short while. Avtur does not have the correct lubricity to protect your delicate fuel injection system.

It's possible that what you were given was just unleaded mogas (in which case your engine should be fine). Perhaps your friend had his own supply of special stuff, in which case it certainly wasn't a standard aviation fuel that's commonly available.

But please don't be tempted to get fuel from an airfield. Most airfields in this country do not sell mogas; they only sell avgas and/or avtur, depending on what types of aircraft usually use the airfield.

But the prospect of paying upwards of £1.30 a litre for avgas is probably what will put you off! :)
