Do you have the FR? allen?

Yes I have an lovely Red TDI FR... and so far I love it. There are five other FR's in my area, four with 17" wheels and one with 18".

I would go for the 18's for the little extra cost of £360, some people have complained about higher road noise on the 17's but i guess its all to do with the tyres.

The larger wheels are much more aesthetically pleasing and will sell your car much faster, and like others have said the bluetooth is a very good thing with the police cracking down on the driving whilst on the phone, and again good for resale point of view.

Another point if you order a solid colour IE White, you will save £350 because it is not metalic, and then you have the money for your 18's

Problem solved!!

18 are a must

So you spent all that money on an amazing cars so why not treat your self and the car to some gorgeous 18.
To be honest i do not know why they are not standard i hate the 17 wheels with a passion they make the car look so ugly.
Also the 18 fill the arches and give the whole car a more aggresive look.
Keep the comments coming in and let the debat continue.

Personally I like the look of the 17's and was worried about paying too much for Tyres seeing as i'm looking at doing loads of mileage (hence getting the TDI). That and alloys lead to bluetooth, bluetooth leads to ipod connector, ipod connector leads to suffering (to paraphrase yoda and my bank manager).

Are 18's going to be slightly more fuel efficient? I would imagine so - as with the tyre being a greater circumference it covers more distance per revolution? therefore a everso slightly higher average mpg in the medium to long turn? Or am I being silly here? I don't imagine changing my tyres much, in the first two years surely it's not necessary.

In case you haven't guessed I'm still trying to decide :D Is the harder ride of the 18s pretty much unnoticeable to the untrained driver?

I can only re-iterate that, from my own personel experience, I found that the ""FR Seats" do tend to compensate for the "harder" ride which is claimed on the 18" wheels. Please note that tyre choice will also make a difference to both ride quality and road noise.

I got the 17"s for one reason..... the £350 is in the bank and adding to it each month so that when i need new tyres i can get a set of 18"s with tyres that are different to all you lot :p Oh and i can sell the 17"s individually to someone that has ruined theirs...lol

Actually should be more respectful as i will almost certainly be asking what ones to get when the time comes...

:funk:

I am very happy with my 17" wheels, and the ride is not as harsh.

Ive got 16" Wheels on at the moment (18's in the garage for winter!!) I can say there is no noticable difference in ride quality..

18's Definately...

The auto-dipping mirror is pretty good, but I cant stand the auto-wipers and lights personally.. And the mirror is (presumably) retofittable.

I took an FR out equipped with 17s, but ordered one with 18s. I was worried about the ride. I couldn't tell any difference in the ride quality but I admit there was ~3 weeks between me driving the demonstrator and receiving my car.

However a couple of weeks after receving my car it had to go back to the $tealers and I was given an FR with 17s again and I really couldn't tell any difference in the ride.

So for me, when people (with 17s) pipe up "Oh the ride is much better" then I think either a) my ar$e is flabbier than theirs or b) they are talking out of their ar$e... and trying to justify their penny pinching.

I couldn't tell the difference getting out of a car with 18s straight in to a car with 17s (and then back again at the end of the day).

So ignore that argument and go for the ones that look good to you.

The 18s are a pain to keep clean. But I would imagine the 17s are as well!

I have been reading this thread with interest and thought I would run this by you as an option.
I bought my Tdi FR with 17`s (saving the £360) I ran them for 7-8 thousand miles till just above legal tread depth (I`ve got a heavy foot and 200+ bhp derv power)then put them on Fleabay:whistle: for I think it was £400:funk:got the price I wanted.then bought my 18inch Cupra wheels(They were brand new in mint condition) from a SCN member for £500:-o.
If you do the sums it worked out OK

but presumably this option can be switch off if I find they keep coming on when I don't want them to?

When I ordered my FR, (still waiting) the dealer talked me out of the 18's saying the ride is hard, but after reading this thread i'm thinking have I done the right thing:cry:. The FR does look good with 18'' wheels.:p

I tested the Leon Fr Tdi on 17"s and saw a few pics on here of people's 18"s and was going to just get the 17" as i quite liked the look of them over the pics of the 18"s.

However the girlfriend convinced me to get the 18"s and now that i've seen them face to face they do make the car stand out more as they add more presence. so i would recommend viewing them in real life if you can as that will make your mind up ;)

In terms of factory fitted options i think the 18" will add a little bit onto your resale value but like most options it won't be much!

I haven't noticed any difference in ride quality and have found the FR Seats supportive (and cushioning) over bumps and round corners.

The only time I questioned my decision to go for the 18s was on the drive home from the hospital after my appendectomy...

I realised it wasn't the wheels, it was the vehicle and for those 20 minutes I wished I had bought a Hovercraft.

SWMBO, bless her, despite trying to dodge all of the potholes managed to hit every one of them... I can still remember the pain...
