Hi all,

I've got a '98 Ibiza 1.4 that has a stuttering idle when cold (and stalls sometimes). I've tried changing the spark plugs, but it hasn't made much difference. (That's another story, I've only changed 3 out of 4, as one of the plugs has a different plug lead, and needs a deep socket to get it out)

Anyway, I've got an OBDII code reader, but I don't know where the port is in the car. Does anyone know where the port location is? I'm hoping to get some usfeul codes out and figure out this cold wobbling idle / stall thing.

Many Thanks,

under the steering wheel. take the little glove box out and its on the left of where the glove box sits.

It won't tell you much at all though.... the fault code reading is poor on the earlier cars.

I'd be looking at a new rotor arm, dizzy cap & HT leads

I found the odb port, but my scanner wouldn't connect to the car - I wasn't surprised as it's a cheap scanner and VAG cars often need a special scanner.

So instead, I've replaced all the spark plugs, the HT leads, and the dizzy rotor, and the air filter today. And the result? It still stalls when cold and stopping at a junction.

Any ideas what to look at next?

Thanks

idle air control.

I called an auto parts place to check if I could get a replacement IAC off the shelf - yes, but £120!!!

Where abouts on the engine is the IAC? Somewhere near the throttle body / air inlet I suppose? Can I just unbolt it and try dousing it with carb cleaner or something??

Thanks in advance,
Spuddly

Get carb cleaner and spray it through the throttle body with the engine running.

It just sounds like a gunked up throttle body to me.

It turns out you were spot on! I looked for a idle-stabilisation valve, but there doesn't appear to be on on this car.

Anyway, while I had the air filter off, I ran the engine and sprayed a load of carb cleaner down the throttle body which cleaned it right up.

Most importantly, the engine now runs and idles perfectly! When pulling up to junctions etc, the revs drop gently to a perfect idle.

Thanks!!
