Hi all,

Right basically went for a short drive just now and all was fine...no ragging just average LCR driving i guess.

  • Went into Tesco and put in £10 of normal unleaded (took me inbetween 1/4 and 1/2 full).
  • Turned the car back on, and it revved all on it's own up to 2k, and stayed there.
  • I gave the throttle a lil bit, and let off....and the revs took ages to settle down.
  • Turned car off and on again...same problem.

  • Drove out of petrol station, and into tesco main car park, and by the time i had pulled over again, the rev's had gone down to 1k...and after a few more minutes went down to the normal 700-800rpm.
  • Went for a spin round the car park, and all seemed normal.
  • Turned car off and on again...same thing happened again, when I revved it the exhaust burbled loads!
  • The revs then dropped down to the normal mark, however this time was a bit quicker than before.
  • Drove home, and all was normal.
Currently waiting for dad to finish with the lappy, so i can get vag-com on it.

In the meantime, anyone had this problem before, or can anyone shed any light on this?

Incase anyone wonders, its a 2003 reg with 48k on the clock, serviced last month.

Thanks in advance!

came back with vag-com and it said that one of the sensors for mapped cooling or thermal something was throwing an error, although i had been messing about with the engine bay the weekend so i may have done something..
Interesting this...Just put vag com on the car...Engine module returned the following fault code (sounds same as yours wez)

"17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling System (usually temp Sensor or Thermostat)
P1296 - 35 - 10 - - - Intermittent"

I've cleared the code, and ran a full Auto Scan, and no codes appeared.

I then started the car, and all seems well. Fingers crossed it won't happen again!

Funny thing is Wez, I have been faffing around in my engine bay too (only spraying engine covers, and marking holes to drill ready for my s3 brace to be fitted)...although it was working fine earlier, and again this evening, and all of a sudden after refueling it throws a paddy....strange

Just so i can see if i've dislodged or knocked this sensor, whereabouts would I find this Temp Sensor or Thermostat?

Thanks again.

well last week i smoothed the air box and therefore disconnected the maf however that was it.

and then yesterday i took off the plastic trim by the manifold, a plug connected to the front of the manifold and the metal bracket the plastic trim screws onto, and the dipstick plastic bits. All went back on within a couple of hours, and nothing was forgotten to be replaced etc. I drove the car later that day, and no problems, drove the car 3 times today, with no problems...then fill up with some fuel, and the problem appeared  very odd.

If anyone knows where the Temp Sensor or Thermostat the above error code might be referring to are, could you please explain where abouts it is located so i can see if i knocked it or something?

Thanks again.

i've been using Tesco 99 ron for months now...although as i'm currently unemployed, i'm having to fill up with less, and today put the first batch of 95ron crap in.

i'll have a search and see what i can find on this coolant sensor thing.

cheer guys

Its the G62 sensor, located to the right hand side of the engine near the front.

Replace the standard black variant with the improved green variant, costs about £25 and can be bought from the stealers or (i believe) from motor factors like GSF.

Thanks m8! Glad to hear it shouldn't break the bank...fingers crossed the problem won't come back, but i'll probably change the sensor anyway seeing as it's not too expensive.

Thanks again for all your help guys :)
