Hi

Coming up to my first service in 56plate FR tdi, do they charge for oil on top of the service cost?

If so, I mite as well take my own oil?

If I should take my own oil, any suggestions? and places to buy the oil? online or shop

Cheers guys

I'm just wondering what the dealer will say with regards to warranty - We all know you will provide oil which is the VAG recommended spec but you know what the dealers are like! Could be saving a tenner but getting more hasstle if you need to claim!

wo wo hold on...

oil is NOT extra. (if its part of the service)
The price they have quoted for a service will include the cost of parts. eg OIL, filters and any parts they renew as part of the service.

the cost they quote is made up of the cost to complete the service, eg labour and the parts used.

however, you m ay get a reduction if you bring your own oil. So if they have quoted for a service and you say ill supply the oil, then they may reduce the cost. (some do, some moan)

id recommend calling them and asking what oil they will use and what discount they will give if you supply the oil.
It may be that the oil they use is ok by you and well priced. in which case just let them get on with it. If you are not happy with oil/price then tell them you will supply the oil and get a discount.

But in short, if they say it wil cost £200 to service the car, thats what you wil pay for the service. They wont bill you £200 + the cost of the oil.
The only times you get charged extra is if you request work thats not part of the service, or if they find something wrong. In which case they SHOULD call you to get your authorisation before completing the work.
Its a good idea to confirm that they will do this when you book the car in.

Oil is part of the service, but that doesn't stop them charging you £45 for it when they paid about 80p/litre for it. I work in this trade so I know the tricks!

When my car gets serviced, I always supply the oil. As stated above, Millers XFE-PD is the right spec and its very cheap.

if they are charging you £45 for oil i suggest you go elsewhere! thats ridiculous.

I've used Millers oil for the last few years in the petrol engined cars I've previously owned (now Ibiza TDi FR). For one thing, as Tom B says, it's priced competitively and I have a stockist nearby. And it comes in 5 litre containers, so you usually have enough for topping up in between services. Whoever has serviced the car has been happy to use the oil I supplied (main dealers included).

I'll definitely be using Millers in the TDi.

You can look on the millers site and find a stockest, although not all on there. i picked up in local motor shop. just drop into one when passing and check if they have it. castrol works out at ~£50/£55 for 5ltrs!!! Crazy!!!
