I am seriously considering an altea

but which is the best engine to go for? the 1.9tdi or the 2.0tdi?

i have obviously looked at all the figures on paper, but wanted some opinions form people that actually live with the cars day in day out.

If you could choose again would you do it differently?

2.0 is a more modern engine, more powerful, stronger clutch if u want a remap.
1.9 is more economical.

I have a 2.0 TDI sport & have also driven the 1.9. TBH the 1.9 don’t feel a lot slower than the 2.0, though I preferred the 2.0 overall. I also like the 6-speed gearbox.

If you can then I'd say go with the 2.0 with DSG. Cracking engine and gearbox.

Around town I average anywhere between 35-40 mpg dependent on how heavy the right foot is.

On the motorway this morning, I was averaging 45-47mpg with spirited driving. Sure it would be easy to get 50+ with a lighter foot but that torque is just too nice.

Ps I used to have a leon 20vt and needed the Altea for an ever increasing family. I did have a few doubts about losing performance/cornering/fun as the leon was a good car but I can honestly say that the Altea is bloody fantastic and amazes me at the speeds it achieves/cornering ability and composure. I would not swap my Altea for a Leon now, no way.

decisions decisions.

what sort of fuel economy are you getting out the 2ltr?

Paul

Car has covered 26,000 miles 05 plate.

As usual it depends on how im driving it & if Aircon is on/off. Aircon takes off about 5mpg.

Apparently if you have the 17" wheels on an Altea the mpg is considerably less. I have the standard alloy 16" fitted.

70mph on a long trip I get 55mpg.

50mph - 60mph A road's I get about 60mpg, though its realy hard to keep under 60mph. Thank goodness i have cruse control to keep the speed down.

I've never got under 45 mpg on a trip.

have checked out the local dealers and ebay and nothing. They are really hard to come by. the 1.9 variant seems easy to get hold of.

But what i dont want to do is get one of those and then wish i had waited for a 2.0

2.0 Tdi all the way! Have driven the 1.9 and seems dead next to the 2.0

I would prefer the 1.9's suspension as my Sports is a little too firm but it goes round corners like its on tracks! :D

I normally change my car every couple of years and this is the 1st time ever that I've had no interest in changing. I cannot recommend the Altea enough, its superb..... and the boys and girls on this forum are great if you ever have any questions....

Its 2.0 TDI Sport, 16" wheels 6 speed gearbox.

The fuel figures I quoted are all from the computer, apparently the computer is a bit generous with the mpg figures on the Altea.

Tab

Well that's a running average off the computer so you drive your first 20 - 30 mile with lower consumption whilst the engine heats up etc, then the figures start to look better but that your last 20 - 30 miles or so, not the first 20 - 30. So that's why the brim to brim doesn't tally with what you are getting.

Not too sure what the time or mileage frame is that it uses on the overall average but that's how it works. Put into this that it's using the mileage as computed by the car, which if it's like the speedo, errors in one direction. I've never checked the mileage with satnav, but the speed I have.

Brim to brim is the most accurate way of computing your actual MPG and adjusting for the distance error... the latter I don't do [yet].

I think most Altea owners like their cars. I reckon its the best car I've owned.
I have a 2.0 TDi DSG with 17" wheels and remap. Fuel consumption ranges from 30 to 45 ish ( real figures not computer) My car is dsriven hard most of the time.
Brilliant performance ,handling and room. As a package, I don't know what car I'd rather have this side of something stupidly expensive!

Yeah, I'm happy with mine, like Loadswines but not re-mapped. Uhh I don't get the 30 MPG mind you, 39 is my running figure from new. I use to get 48 on my old Citreon ZX 1.9 TD but then it didn't have 6 air bags, comfey seats, superior view of the road, and wasn't covered for cheap breakdown cover in Euro after 10 years, whilst this is thown in, not forgetting the DSG gearbox, the sound system with the swapped our speakers, the 140 MPH top speed, never tested it, 100 it does no problems, fast acceleration, load capacity, looks, style etc. Auto dipping mirror nearly forgot that with the red light that people think is funky, best to look at the road than the red light I think. So those pratts that chase up the back of you and blind you can't do that, but then if they are sport cars they sit below where you can see them and you always got the 2.0 TDI engine to bung out smoke at open tops that annoy. Present company accepted or stick you foot down and let the DSG do the work.

Mind you, you probably can't find a 2.0 TDI since people are hanging onto them. In 2004 or so there were Irish spec Altea imports of low spec 1.9 cars, watch out for them.

from the 03/05 brochure back tables

Additional to Sport

6 speed gear box

ESP (de-activation) & EBA

[Stylance and Sport both have ABS and TCS]

Sports Seats

17" alloy wheels [option / mis print]

The sport has spots suspension which the stylance doesn't have ...

The 2.0 engine is only on the sport and the DSG option

That's what the tables say but Seat have twiddled with the specs since launch and as I said the Irish cars were of lower spec and these were getting into Car Supermarkets. As I recall they had the bog standard non automatic or non dual control aircon on their Stylances whilst the British ones had the same air con as the Sports.

What Seat have been doing more recently is to make stuff as optional packs so you don't get the automatic dipping mirror which was standard on the Sports initially. Probably best to get the latest brochure and check list what is on a second car against that and the current options.

The biggest difference apart from the 1.9 engine is that you won't get the bucket seats and the sports suspension.
