bougth a seat altea tdi 1.9 got 3 months warrenty with it went to pick it up from garagde and pulled forword and thougth sum things no write with this clucth thougth first diesal mibi just mee so drove out the garagde and noticed it was juddering like mad left it a couple days as thougth mibi just mee had it checked at my local garagde and he said take it back clucth is finished so i phoned up booked it in got told the clucth and flywheel were finished and would be replaced under warrenty :D happy happy

went and picked the car up nocticed it still shudderd a bit thougth new clucth let it settle in 100 miles later noticed went you put the foot down it was like the gear box was jumpin about lot of vibs througth the car so took it back macnic came out said well go for a test drive a said we wont need to go far lol so jamp in the car put it in revers and judder judder he said ill give you your due its got vibration so he took it in the garagde half a hour to a hour later i see the service manager reversing it off the ramps and he comes in and says hi there theres nuffin wrong with your car even tho i seen him checkin it his self he suggested we went for a test drive i was like yeah no probs jamp in i lifted the clucth and judder judder after the bit he said to me your not given it any diesial aye said i shouldnt have to im not on a hill should be abel to pull off the clucth he said no no you must give it diesail i said would this not over time burn the clucth out ? he said no so i contind with the test drive car was perfect no vibs or nothing part from pullen off but with given it tht little bit diesail it felt perfect

so we got back to the garagde i suggested tht the macanic must have mucked about with some thing he said well leave it a couple of day and see how it feals if you not happy book it in to seat for a health check and tell them to contact us and well fix any thing they say is wrong so i said but thats going to cost me money tho he shrugged his sholders and said well so so on 50 miles later am trying to get clucth bit on a hill no probs getting bite min a go to realse the clucth judder judder thn i stop put the hand break on and try liften it to bit and given it some diesail and its like you get a pause from it thn followed but a few small judders

dose any body have any ideas what my problum is as going back tomoro to speake with the top dog and to add the cars only done 41,800 miles
and if i ind write i drove my old work van 3 or 4 times and that was a 59 plate vw caddy and had 187k on it but still went you lifted the clucth it went forword its self a little bit then you appley diesail and i had no issus with it at all

I gather from what your post says Porkey is that you have a juddering as you release the clutch?

I am experiencing simliar with my car. I have an Altea 1.9 TDi Ref Sport, 2006. My Dad has had the car from approx 12 months old. No probs, then it started to develop a very slight judder occasionally when you pulled away. Not all the time. I noticed this when I occasionally drove a journey in it.

I told him to take it back to Seat, which he did on 3 occasions while it was still in the warranty period (to be fair the judder wasnt really that bad but I was keen for him to get it checked while in warranty) and they had it for 3 full days on seperate occasions, checked it out and said that they couldn't find nything wrong with it. To be fair it didnt do it all the time.

It went out of warranty in 2009 and my Dad has been driving it no problems or complaints.

I drove it a lot last year as I needed the space on quite a few occasions (was running Fabia vRS at the time), nd didnt really take much notice of it juddering/was particularly bad or evident.

Come 2012 and with my now 6 month old son, our cars in the Lewwy household were getting a bit cosy (Fabia vRS and Beetle TDi), and as my Dad was keen to get something new after 5 years I have had the Altea from him. S
But since I have had it I have really noticed the juddering. Whether its because I am not alot more pickey (I am) now that its my car/problem!

As posted by Porkey, if when pulling away I raise the revs to approx 1500 rpm, and release the clutch then the juddering is a lot less obvious/non-existant (in doing this I am not slipping the clutch at all - it is a smooth take off - no wheelspin or clutch ride). But as Porkey has said you shouldnt need to do this in a diesel (I have been driving TDi's since 2001 - Bora Sport TDi, Fabia vRS, Beetle TDi etc). You should be able to lift the clutch and the car pull itself along from its own tickover nice and smooth.

My gut feelings are its a release bearing problem, as there is no evident noises from a flywheel that I can detect, the car has just clocked 42,500 miles FSH, and not been raced or rallied (Dad is 67 yr old retired), I know the flywheels usually make some kind of racket when they have had enough, there is no clutch slip that I have felt either.

The gear change isnt quite as smooth as the Beetle (same engine and gear box), but i know that all cars are different, and its still a perfectly fine change on the Altea.

Apologies for the life story , but wanted to lay some background to my tale of woe

Any input or ideas gratefully received.

Did the guy actually say 'you must give it diesel' cos that's a very strange way of saying. You must press the throttle a bit as you release the clutch. Having learnt to drive in a petrol, I have always done this. The only exception would be in slow moving traffic. You get moving quicker if you give it some revs! :)

Some diesels aren't as forgiving. My old PD130 cordoba would stall if you didn't give it some revs unless you were very gentle with it.

It's a big car and not a very powerful engine. If I get the launch wrong on mine it will judder a bit, but only because it was close to stalling.

My car did have something in the service history about diagnosing a judder on take off, but there was nothing reported after the check. If the clutch etc has been fixed there's not much else that could cause a judder except for perhaps a worn engine mount?

Well yesterday after tryn to fite with the clucth and revers out the drive I desided to give a bit rubber burning wheel spins as I was peed off and seems to be a bit better today pullen away off the clucth but still dosnt like revers so I still went ahead and took it to the garadge EVANS HALSHAW RENAULT/USED CAR SUPER MARKET

So went in and told the recipections tht am here to am here to see the general managder he came out with a master tech and they both went for w test drive in my car and came back so I went out in the car with the general manager probs agdes with my grandad and he was revin the tits out it to move and thn he crunshed it in revers thn agreed there was sum vibs and said there not clucth rlated tho and a said what are they and he said weve checkd every thing got a new tyre out him and passengers doors gettin painted ha

But iv desided to leave it a month to see if it gets worse thn go thro consomer direct

And for the person who commentd tht was the service manager tht said it and I quote tht was his exact word there igrant as hell

Aww yeah and to add dash is now starten to rattle but acorredin to the gerneral manager thats fine cause it only dose it at certan rev 2000 rpm !!

Gawna just start listen every thing down

Porkey, I can agree that mine is definitely at its worst juddering wise when I am trying to reverse out of my drive. Reverse gear def seems to show it up at its worst. I have to reverse over a bump and it seems to judder worse then.

Porkey let us know how you get on with your car and if you get anything diagnosed/sorted out

My thorey is that some thing like a bush/ mount knarckers and adds extra presure on the flywheel/clucth what caused it to pwck inn now that mines has new fly wheel and clucth a reckon its only a matter of time before it burns its way thro that cause in my case whn reversin its eather shudder shudder or rev the face off it like a woman/pensioner dose. And my view other or is causen far to much strain on the gearbox and all componants a mind when aye had a little part time job in a garagd and clucth jobs came in horrible rover 45 ha and thats what I had to do to get it to move high revs and judder judder

Anyway goin to appear at my local seat tomoro and ask for a health check and see what they say as its not seats warrenty aye have a funny fealing thell have a clue about what it is then ill take my prof to evans and skin them lol
Car cost me 6 k so far av had a mot and a brand new tyre and a clucth and flywheel and am gettin the passengers side painted hmm before a no it this car mae have been a good buy lol

Well popd in the day there only opend till 12 the guy at the service desk had a wee shot as all the macahnics were busy nd he said u sure they put a clucth and flywheel in and said its not tht commin in the seats more aldi s said bring it back next week well get a machnic to have a good look and u kin show him what u mean he also agreed with me if we keep given it diesail to get rid of judder over time well have clucth problums

The only thing that I keep thinking is that if it was clutch or release bearing judder then surely it would do it all of the time? Why does it not judder when release it with a bit more gas applied?

In my engineering thinking (I am an electrical engineer not a mechnical one tho!) if there was a release bearing or clutch plate/flywheel problem then i would expect it to be evident whenever the clutch is released? Not be much worse in reverse, and not be massive improved when pulling away with just a couple of hundred more RPM applied?

Hopefully it is something that a Seat mechanic has seen before and can shed some light on the problem. Let me know how you get on.

update for you lewwy aye took it in to seat this morning they confermed there was a judder and said they think its a high bit on the fly wheel and advised me to do another 500 miles and if it was the same they would like it back in to take the gear box off to have a look and he stated 5 to 6 hours work i also said to him tht av al ready done 500 mile in it since clucth/flywwheel changd and also about how bad it was on hills he said well its up to you see what evans say to you so i took it back to evans halshaw and showd them all the proff i had and i said to the general manager im rejecting the car and he said he declines my rejectsion based on the fact that there happy to repair any fault with the car that i point out and every time i picked a fault he say its not a brand new car and its done 40k u should expect some ware and tare i was like yous put a new clucth in hows that ware and tare its bloody brand new shouldnt be any judders also if found a very important guide to LUK CLUCTH dianostics but can post url on here

How do, just seen your reply.
A 'high bit' on the flywheel? Not heard of that one before!
Seems like you are banging your head against a wall with Evans Halshaw.

I have noticed with mine over the last week or so that the clutch has gone smooth, with no juddering on 2 x different occasions. Which is very strange and it makes it all the more intriguing now. Although on last drive it was still juddering on me

Whats your next move going to be with it then?

Whats the LUK Clutch guide?
