Air Conditioning Problem?

Its been quite warm this afternoon, so I dropped the climatic control down to "Lo". I noticed that the cold air coming through the vents wasnt as cold as norm. I'm now starting to question myseld about the cold temp. Is there anyway I can check this? What should the temp be?

With the doors shut and the air con running a thermometer right next to the vents should be around 5-10 degrees, sometimes if an air con hasnt been run for a while the seals can fail and cause gas to leak meaning the air con wont work!!
But also the 'feel' test isnt always reliable (thats placing your hand next to vents and feeling the temp) so a thermometer is the best way to tell.

Did you make sure that the ECO button was turned off? with it on, it doesnt get as cold as it could be, turn it off, and it will be like a fridge.

You know I never touch he Econ or Auto buttons, I jsut rotate the Temp knob to the required setting.

sometimes if an air con hasnt been run for a while the seals can fail and cause gas to leak meaning the air con wont work!!

Mines doing this (as in progress) by the looks of it, although its not gone completely yet. I have discovered an oily liquid running down on of the air con pipes. Both while on and off. It has left a a nice patch on the undertray and unfortunately on the drive too.

The system is set on Auto normally but i don't think its probably run as much as it should have and I think a seal is going.

I have got it booked in to check as i don't the expense of a wrecked compressor if it is leaking. Its just typical only 6 weeks out of warranty too.

Sounds like you may just have leaking pipes - these are £150 ea. I managed to find a MK4 in the breakers, so £15 for me. The best way to find the leak is for the garage to refill with a dye in the system.

Ive just picked my car up and was advised 2 switch on the Air-Con at least once a week for 30mins 2 stop the gas from discharging itself.

Going 2 go on wot they said and hopefully i dont get any problems.

Give it a go and c if it works.

Correct - you should be doing this as it ensures that the seals dont dry out and crack on the compressor - thats where they leak sometimes. Other areas are the hoses, where the solid pipes are - mine corroded and had pin size holes in the pipe.

The system is sealed, so in theory it shouldnt need gassing unless theres a leak. On the other hand, other people say that over a period of time it will need gassing moisture in the sytem etc. Mine was over 3yrs when I noticed that the system wasnt as it should be. I think the dealers say 2yrs.

I may be doing that my self then. Although mine appears to be leaking from the joint just after where the pipe bends down off the chassis leg and connects into the U-bend before it goes to the air con radiator, so im hoping its just the seal thats gone.

My 04 Ibeza today has started doing somthing very odd and nasty, the outside temp display on the aircon unit dosn't display and the system blows HOT air all the time (as in quite obviosly heated) what ever it's set to. The temp display on the MFD is working. All was fine on the drive out but when I got in this after noon it was playing up.

Yes it's still within it's warranty but they have sofar done everything they can think of to avoid fixing any other problems. Still I have a copy of te codes, cleared them and they came back one by one, I'm guessing that it's actualy just the Control Module that's gone and it;s throwing up the other errors from that.

As a slight aside, do people notice much of a did in fuel economies when running the air con?

chill 14 remember you still have quite alot of pressure within the pipework, whether it is runing or idle.
I suspect that the oil type substance running down your pipework is, refrigerant and oil from your compressor, you definately need to extract whats left in the system( purge) have them re seal this, you may find this is heating the pipework, etc and regassing.

maxcars 1 you seem definately low on gas, you need a check both runnig (system working) and one at idle, you may just require a quick squirt of refrigerant to put you back into the green as it were.

yep I was low on gas, because one of my condensor to compressor pipes were split All is now fixed though

The condensor pipes are a dealer part and cost £153 May be worth sourcing a 2nd hand one if you can.
