I took my car in today for it's 3rd year service and the dealer has just phoned to ask if I want my air con servicing. It costs about £120 depending on how much refrigerant they need to put in.

I said no as it still cools as well as my freezer. Should I have gone for it now or should I get a specialist to do it as it sounds fairly pricey.

Just wondering what everyone else does?

1st MOT today BTW! My car is 3 years old next month!

I'd have it done if its never been touched. Bacteria and stuff build up in the system and it needs to be cleaned out, and fresh gas won't hurt. Maybe not let the dealer do it - see if there are any air-con specialists locally that will give you a quote.

When they service the aircon they remove the old refridgerant and replace it also adding oil which lubricates the compressor and seals. National Aircon will come to your home and do it for about £70 and they recommend a service every two years. We had two cars done at once and got a good discount. It's worth looking after as a new compressor can be pricey.

Sounds a bit expensive to me. It's worth doing if you can have it done cheaper, fresh gas and oil in the system will improve it and getting rid of all the bacterior.

My car is 3 years old September. How much was the service? Did you have the brake fluid changed?

TBH, I wasn't planning on having air con serviced.

The service was £104 +VAT plus £4.35 for the oil filter, 95p for a plug , £26.40 for oil, £1.65 for lock grease, £1.50 for B/Cleaner (again WTF?) and £2.20 for screenwash despite me brimming it on Monday night, although I did get a 1litre bottle to take home with me.

Brake fluid change is every 2 years or 20,000 miles so you shouldn't need it doing yet. One to look forward to
Just watch they don't get brake fluid on the calipers and the paint doesn't like it.

Plug = sump plug
B/cleaner = brake cleaner

And it comes as a kit (at a discount to the dealer) so you get the washer fluid whether you like it or not.

Simon.

When at the dealers having my 2yr 20K service they said it would need the brake fluid doing. When I got the bill there was no mention of it. Now I'm thinking it wasn't done, but there agin I wasn't chaged for.

So does it matter? the brakes work just fine.

aircon shoudl only cost about £60 - £70 to have it regassed

Well from a Farmers point of view, the dealers tell us to leave the Air Con system well alone, if its working dont touch it !! other than keeping all Rad's clean etc etc & running the system weekly if poss it should be ok.

I even spoke to a Fridge Specialist the other wk, & he said the same...

U must run the AC tho all thro the winter, not using it regularly does more damage to the seals in the system because there is a oil lub in the gas that circulates around everything....

Just me 10p worth. it might be wrong or right !!

I was in my dealers today (W Livingstone, Uddingston) and notice that if you're getting the car serviced they'll do the a/c service for £70 (usually £90)

They recommend every 2 years

Seems OK given the comments made here

Just reading this ole thread as my car is coming up to 3 years old and I'm having 3rd year service and inspection on it (£180!! + vat).
I enquired about an air con service (there's nothing wrong with mine and it works fine) I was quoted £50.
Was wondering anyone's opinion on here that's had air con service at 3 years on a SEAT. On an older Audi that's never had an air con service the air con works fine and has super cooling. Is it worth the service or is it a con?;)

Basically everything is due this month:
First MOT, Tax (£210), service, insurance and 2x new tyres so its basiaclly a very expensive month for me.
