Airbag light after FR wheel upgrade

Hi all..
I've got a 2004 Ibiza 130tdi with cruise control...
I was in my local scrappy today and found a Ibiza FR 130
I noticed the steering wheel has the radio controls on them so had the wheel and airbag..
Once home I fitted the pair and my airbag light stayed on...
I removed the new FR airbag and noticed that the main airbag / horn wiring had not fully seated where it plugs onto the clock Spring / slipper ring, so I clipped it on properly but still the airbag light stays on..
In the end I refitted all of my original parts and the light stays on..
I've scanned it and it comes up with fault code 00588 irrespective of the combination of FR or original parts...

Do the FR Ibizan have a different airbag module ?
Or any other ideas...

Plus, is the a wiring diagram for installing the FR steering wheel controls for the radio...?

Thanks

The light will stay on once you've put the DTC in the system just swap them back over and clear the trouble code should be fine.

Hi....

Thanks for the reply...

It doesn't natter what arrangement I have the light / fault code will not clear....
I've tried old airbag with FR wheel - FR airbag with FR whel - Std airbag with Std wheel and FR airbag with St wheel and I've obviously cleared the code after each attempt, but as doo as you start the car up the code reappears.....

Do you think starting the car up with the bag disconnected might have damaged the module ?

Thanks again.

apologies you never know what level you're starting out at when offering advise, pull the air bag and check the pins on the wheel side, are you swapping the loom over between air bag or did the new unit come with a loom?

I would also check the clock spring mechanism if this has been damaged during removal this will also cause the light to stay on.

the 00588 code should say something like airbag ignitor n95 upper limit or short to ground this would go a long way as to working out what is causing the issue.

If you can read live data you can test the clock spring via the scan tool by reading the angle measurement at the steering wheel

It is also possible that the new unit hex code does not match and needs to be programmed in this has lodged the code until either unit is programmed to the vehicle, but I would suspect this to throw a secondary fault code module incorrectly coded or such.

Hi....
I removed the items from the FR in the scrappy...
I got wheel, airbag, loom that connects the pair together and the indicator stalk assembly / clock Spring

I didn't remove any wiring car side of the indicator assembly...

The thing that baffles me is when I put my original wheel, loom, airbag and clock Spring back on the light still won't clear...

The equipment I'm using I doubt is capable of performing some of the test you mention... It's simply a code reader... But I'll double check.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, so the problem has now evolved....

I had a play with my scanner and performed a " output " test on the airbag system...
The hazards went on by themselves and the airbag light has now returned to normal operation with the FR wheel and bag fitted... Brilliant !!

Problem now is that I've got no PAS... And no fault code for a PAS fault.. Just a orange light on the dash..
I find it had to believe that performing a output test on the airbag system where the bags are not deployed would render the airbag module in a state that it requires a "crash log" to be removed... But I do understand that the test has rendered the PAS inoperable until it's told to turn back on again... Only my scanner has a communication failure when I attempt this through the steering activation option....

Anyone else had to reset the PAS after an airbag activation before ?

Ok, so an update for others that have similar issues later....

Somehow installing the Ibiza FR multifunction wheel into a Ibiza Sport and leaving the big plug behind the airbag disconnected and starting the car caused a fault code as above...
This code would not clear... Period, irrespective of subsequent wheel / airbag configurations...
The code was eventually cleared by carrying out a airbag output test...
This test does not set off your airbags, but does register a "crash" within the airbag module... This disables the PAS pump.
To overcome this you'll need to clear the code with "steering assist" using vacom.
The code within the airbag module is not the type of code that renders the module needing specialist re-activation... I did disconnect my battery for 30 mins in a earlier attempt to get the PAS system working again... I'd read that doing so will bring the airbag module back from its "crash responce" status, but as the PAS code still required removal with Vagcom I don't actually know if it was required or not, as on the face of it there was no change within the car...

Now I just need to sort out the radio controls side of things to get the wheel fully functioning.

Hello there.. sorry for getting into your conversation. I am waiting my multifunction steering wheel with airbag to arrive (for my Ibiza 6L ASZ engine), but I don't know what else should be replaced in order to make the buttons work (parts, modules, etc), could you please help, I would really appreciate that, you can contact me on skype if you want: alex.sertev. Thank you in advance!
