hi, ive seen a lot of VAG COM questsions recently and heres another,

i have purchased a cheap ebay cable to run along side with =VCDS lite

this hasnt worked as a lot of other people have found out.... i only want to read basic codes/ turn the service light off after servicing my leon fr 170 tdi

can anybody reccomend a scanner that can do this or a genuine site to buy a genuine cable ?

preferably cheap as possible as christmas has crippled me:cry:

Why isn't the VAG-COM working exactly? I had a cheap one and it worked flawlessly until my laptop wirelessly connected to the internet while I was using it and it got fried. The cheap VAG-COM cable should be able to clear errors, scan the car for any malfunctions, play in the central electronics, etc.

cOPY AND PASTED TO WHAT I HAVE POSTED IN ANOTHER FORUM

hi, i hav purchased a usb lead for the laptop to be able to read faults and turn the service light off etc etc,

i have installed the software sucessfully, when on the software it is displaying a message saying "interface not found"

i have contacted the seller who said the following:

you need to go into your device manager on your computer
when you open device manager open look at ports (COM&LPT) in the list of devices and double click on USB serial port and under port settings click the advanced button, i will need to change your COM port to the same COM you selected in device manager e.g COM1

right so i have done the above apart from when i open device manager i do not have any tab named COM&LPT
im lost on where to find these ports ?

not the most technical when it comes to computers !!

What kind of cable did you buy? Is it a USB one? And are you sure it is CAN-BUS rather than just OBDII? You're supposed to choose "USB" if it's a USB cable rather than "COM1 or w.e" and then press TEST and see if it responds. If not, then I am afraid you received a malfunctioning cable.

It could also be tried due to connecting to the internet while using it. Have you done that?

When you go into options on VCDS have you tried selecting the USB port, then click test.
On my laptop the USB was the interface port.

Why would connecting to the Internet fry it? Reason I ask is looking at doing this myself

If you have got hold of a "cheap" version of VCDS from eBay and it turns out to be a ripped-off copy of the Ross-Tech product, it will be disabled by Ross-Tech as soon as they see it.

andymac123: you have a Mk.2 Leon which is based on the Mk.5 Golf: these are CAN-bus cars and VCDS-Lite won't work with them.

The Vgate VS450 scanner is the one that people have been recommending recently: about £35 I think.
