Can someone give information how clean the EGR Valves. Is WD40 used to clean the valves or another substance?

I used parafin - it's oil based like diesel and is safe with most rubber & plastic.

It's pretty cheap to buy too.

Thank you for the information. I will clean the EGR valve this weekend.

Can I ask the stupid question of where is the egr valve? Lol

Its bolted to the intake manifold, at the top nearest the windscreen.

Ive got mine, and my intake manifold soaking in white spirit just now.

leave it soaking overnight in brake fluid if you've got some old stuff handy.
turns all the hardened soot into black sludge that can be easily wiped off!

I'm looking to clean my egr valve in the coming weeks (1.2 12V) The one worry I have is, does the egr need re adapting with VCDS once cleaned??

Dont fancy cleaning it out and find it keeps stalling once fitted!

Any help from anyone who's done this would be much appreciated.

Dunno about the 1.2, but my pd130, the EGR is vacuum operated. I highly doubt your will need any kind of coding.

I just cleaned the EGR Valve and pipe today. Mines is an Ibiza Cupra TDI. It's 5 bolts in total. Would be a 10 minute job, but the bolts are located in THEE MOST awkward of places. Lets just say my hands are pretty cut-up. Took me best part of 2 hours but my engine management light has gone off now :D

It is simple enough though. I used engine degreaser and worked a treat. Just have to persavere!

I may write a 'how to' thread on this next week as I took before and after photo's. Away this weekend though.

Just take off your engine cover and it's located near the top lest of the engine bay. Looks like a little flying spaceship :p

Just watch out you don't drop an allen key as I did. Took me ages to find it!

ha know what you mean now bout awkward. Smashing my hands on bits I wish was never there lol. I also dropped the Allen key. I'm still looking for it. I daren't start my car lol any how my brothers garage use brake cleaner worked pretty well to be fair

And attacks rubber too.

There is a rubber diaphagm in the top of the EGR

but so do most solvent degreasers, white spirit, thinners, brake cleaner e.t.c!

ive done about a dozen cars with brake fluid and no problems so far!

bung the vacuum connection with a bung first if your gonna leave it soaking in anything

The 130TDI EGR is quite awkward to get off if you got fat hands (speak from experience :p) you need a short set of allen keys and i used some pliers on the short end to turn it to crack the studs off. As for the cleaning, good old elbow grease and some parafin! maybe your sisters tooth brush might help too!

It really is that straight forward aka 5 bolts. However the bolts really are in the most awkward of places, so if you have small skinny hands then your laughing. I on the other hands have big hands which was a pain.

As said bit of degreaser/white spirit etc and loads of elbow frease and your sorted. I'll post pics up soon when I get back (working up in the mountains this weekend) so keep an eye out, as when I was gonna do it i couln't find a decent thread on it!

Please do a write up on how to take the manifold off. I've had one attempt to do this but didn't manage it on my cupra tdi. Do you access the bolts from the top of the engine?

I give you permission to pull a sickie as I feel writing this how to would help benefit your seat career further

I've got this on my to do list as well. Next saturday hopefully. I've found this guide which may be useful to people, not for a Mk IV Ibiza but think it should be roughly the same.

I'm cleaning out the intake manifold as well. Will Mr Muscle Oven cleaner be alright to clean it or where abouts would you get a bottle of parrafin from??

Not sure i would use oven cleaner.

B&Q do parafin as do most diy stores I would guess
