I'm thinking of getting a used Leon mk3 as a second/backup car. Currently we got Leon mk4 150 etsi dsg ex lux hatch, which is luckily not the first year batch with lots of issues. The experience of reading of all those issues makes me think I should check for any issues with particular years/configurations of mk3. So what would be the recommend configuration/year and is there anything to avoid? Is it OK to get a high mileage car (60-100K)? We probably only going to drive it for 2-3K a year... Thank you.

What is your budget? What body 3dr/5dr/ST? What trim level? Petrol or Diesel? This may help with responses.

As with most new cars in production, the majority of faults are in first 6-12 months production (including FL updates). As with Mk4 majority of these are software/electrical related on Mk3.

Personally I would avoid the 1.5l 130/150 PS petrol engine.

Also, possibly use the search feature - loads of threads with ‘thinking of buying’, ‘hints for buying’ etc.

Thank you for your reply. I'm looking at 5dr, but otherwise completely opened to configuration/trim as long as its ULEZ compliant. I do want to get it as cheap as possible (good value for money really but without a budget) - that's why looking at high mileage ones. So should I be avoiding first 2013 year then? Back then they had 1.2/1.4 petrol engines - are those ok or not?
