Anyone removed the throttle body?

I think my TB might need a clean out. I've removed and cleaned them from other engines but this front, downward facing TB is a bit daunting.

Anyone removed one? Anything especially fiddly about it or is it easier than it looks?

For info mines a 2011 CDL engine, 2.0 tfsi Leon cupra r.

What's the symptoms that you think it needs a clean? Not really a common thing to do on these like the 1.8t engines.

Depending on mileage may need the inlet valves cleaning as they can get clogged up with carbon deposits.

I've got the same engine and on previous cars, I've always cleaned the TB periodically. I've often stood there looking at the TB on the Cupra and thought about how I'd do it. I've not plucked the courage up to do it yet.

However, what Alex says is something I'm getting increasingly more concerned over; I'm new ring 65k miles on my 2011 and it's starting to feel a little sluggish. I've been quoted £500 to have it done at AMD, which I thought was a little bit steep though lol

65k I would probably say would need them inspecting, you'd be surprised how clogged they can get. £500 is steep, usually around £300 ish plus cost of injector seals.

If you are planning on tuning beyond stage 1 would be worth sticking in a runner flap delete at the same time.

There are guides on the net for removing the manifold and there's some good products to clean the valves if it's a job you want to take on yourself.

Otherwise one of these like I used on mine is what most places that cost £300+ use

£300 all in including cleaning is a good price it's 3 hours labour to remove and place back on and about 3 hours cleaning time at least most places charge £60 hour at a vw specialist.

So mileage is only 32k, means I've put off the idea of carbon build up, but it's on the list. Is there an easy way to tell if it's bad without taking bits off?

Symptoms, well, long story as short as I can...

Car revs itself gently from idle when you come off the power, or maintains revs slightly before dropping. Then it finds a fairly stable idle. Have slowly worked my way through the normal problems. PCV and diverter valve first. No dice. Have had it smoke and pressure tested to no avail up at awesomegti who reccomended the lambda might be going, but no.

Can't get over the idea that it's a vacuum leak somewhere somehow, but that's because I had so many of them with the 1.8t. If that revved you knew air was definitely getting through somewhere, had to be. This tfsi I'm not so sure.

Next mechanic friend recommended trying to clean the TB, but that would cause a jittery idle AFAIK, this is smooth when it gets there, but like I said, working my way through the list.

Thanks for the thoughts

You should get it plugged into vcds and check what the fuel trims are doing. If they quite out of spec (usually 0 +/- 5) then you could have an air leak.

There is also another uncommon place for them to leak which is inside the rocker cover itself, they have channels through the top for the pcv and evap system.

On mine I also had the plastic brake booster line split on the right rear side of the engine similar to what happened on the 1.8t engines.
