just had a call from the stealers with regards to my almost identical issue. They have had my car in and on the computers. The stereo unit needed a "re-code" an they also changed the AUX jack just to be sure.
No mention of me paying or anything like that!
Im off to pick it up in a min (cant handle the no power Altea ive been using any longer!)
ill let you know if it works later although im still unsure how they could just re-code the headunit to accept AUX in!?
