back box corrosion.what can i do?

Mufflerectomy. Chop off backbox at joint with exhaust, replace with pipe and stick the tips back on. 
Sure, this doesn't mean you're saving the backbox but it sounds like it's on the way out. They blow quite spectacularly when that corrosion works right through.

Not on a diesel as water is only in very small quantities as a by product of combustion unlike petrol which yields quite a lot!

i've noticed this on my car aswell, but resigned myself to just getting a full miltek system when it blows

Sorry, you're wrong there, combustion of diesel and air produces large amounts of water vapour.
When i had a Fiat punto and the box corroded i could buy a back box replacement without having to change the whole exhaust system, im guessing this should be common and the ibiza's no exception. I don't want to spend loads. Anyone got recommendations. I suppose i could cut the box off as said above and piece together a second hand box....err.. thinking about it maybe not.
