Still very much a petrol head myself but to be fair I havnt driven a modern derv. I just don't like the sound they make and the thought of not being able to rev them very much.

I did buy enougher petrol! sold the 2.4 diesel and bought a cupra instead! and love it!
Dosen't sound like there are many converts back from the darkside, one best diesel engines i've ever driven was the old focus tdci, besides the idle, very hard to tell it was a diesel in it's mannerisms, unfortuantly the misses gave it a good tankfull of 98 unleaded
To the carsupermarket it went, for the quickest trade in ever:whistle:

Before i had my Golf TDi 130 I had a Focus TDCI Sport which was a pool car until my golf was delivered.

To say it was in a different league tot he Golf was an understatement, very gutless and asthmatic by comparison, i had to put up with that for 4 months waiting for the golf, and managed to tott up 18000 mile sin it

We have a petrol and a diesel in the family and I think the torque argument is overrated. Yes the diesel has about 40% more torque, but the petrol cruises with about 40% more revs, so the effective power-at-the-wheels at typical cruising speeds is about the same.

As a mile eater, I'll take my wifes diesel just for the fuel economy. For everyday driving (about 10,000 per year, 1/3 motorway, 2/3 country roads) I'll take the petrol every time.
